Hi everybody,
I'd like to know what a typical Jamaican day is, culinary wise? Do you go with a huge nourishing British Tea, or rather big dinner? And what's for breakast, lunch and so on?
Thx 4 all,
gF

A typical Jamaican breakfast can be anything, from the usual Continental Breakfast of Coffee/Tea, toast, jam, butter, eggs, bacon etc....to the Jamaican type breakfast of Ackee and Codfish with Johnny Cakes (fried dumplings), or boiled dumplins and some other ground provision. We also do Liver, callaloo (spinach family), codfish, cornpork served with bread or ground provision. Also left over from the previous evening's dinner maybe used for breakfast, or just plain porridge/cereal.
Some Jamaicans like every where else I suppose will have a large lunch and a small dinner or both depending on the individual.

Hi there,
and thanks for the help. That Ackee sounds like you need to know how to handle it (I googled it).
Do I read that correctly, that breakfast is the highlight of the day? What are the national dishes for lunch or supper? Are there any?
Best regards,
gF

You are welcome.
Well ackee frsh off the tree and still in their pod you have to know. If the pod is not open then DON'T eat it, its poisonous. I don't like canned food but the canned ackee is not bad.
Ackee & codfish is the National Dish.
Again there are no real set dishes on a daily basis, not now any ways. Growing up we use to have specific days, like Saturday and most rainy days would be soup. Sunday would definately be Rice & Peas day with some meat kind, chicken, fish, pork, etc. Wednesday use to be Stewed Peas and Rice day. Fridays many ppl didn't cook, eat out day or something light at home.

Yes, ackee has to be picked when ripe, not before. It is also cleaned, boiled and drained before used in any meal. Otherwise it can be toxic.
There are no "national dishes" for lunch and dinner per se, the only national dish is the ackee and saltfish and that is eaten anytime but mostly for breakfast. We do eat a lot of starches (yam, etc.) and rice and peas. The all-time popular meal could easily be Chicken with rice and peas. Also popular are meals like stew peas, curry goat/chicken, roast pork, and soups. We are also influenced by the west so there are the fast food outlets for those on the go.

BTW I forgot to mentioned that our dishes are influenced by our African ancestors, (mostly by our African ancestors), as well as the British, Spanish (Escovitch Fish), Indians (Curry dishes).
Note that we also have many Chinese restaurants and other types. Jamaica while predominantly African descent is also a melting pot of many other races.
