why do they call this place jamaica

The word "Jamaica" comes from the Arawak word "Xaymaca" which means "land of wood and water". As you will recall, the Arawaks were the original inhabitants of Jamaica.

Plain and simple
The word Xaymaca is pronounced* hamaica but is spelt Xaymaca (spanish thing know what I mean kid)
