Never heard about people worshipping the pope. Where you get that information from?
I know he was respected as a religious leader. But not being worshipped. He wouldn't tolerate that.

I am Catholic and I do not worship the Pope. As usual there are many ppl out there who know little or nothing about the Catholic faith and they spout a lot of nonsense. It's ok if you do not know but it's not ok when someone tries to explain and you take an attitude as if you know best.
BTW not all Catholics have a good understanding of the Catholic faith themkselves!

I am not Catholic, and I cannot sit here and say that Pope John Paul II, in any way touched me, but he obviously did touch the lives of others. For that I want to express my condolensces to Catholics and others whom's lives he may have touched in a profound way. I am glad to see his suffereing come to an end. It must have taken alot of dignity, mental and physical strengh to present yourself to the world in such a wretched state, for so many years.
Just a few facts on the pope:
1.He was the first non-Italian Pope in about 450 years of the papacy.
2.He was born in Poland.
3.He was an actor, and an athlete (he played football aka Soccer).
4.He helped Jews during the Nazi invasion of Poland.
My interest now lies in who will be his replacement. Candidates have been mentioned from all parts of the globe, including South Africa, Latin America, and of course Europe. I think it is a safe bet that the next pope will not be an American.

BM...I like your attitude :)
For me the Pope's passing will be missed because of the person he was and what he gave to the world.
Other than that, I am not overly sad simply because I believe that he led a "full life" and most importantly, as the bible says "To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord"

Because it isn't possible to drop bombs on over 1 billion ppl spread across the globe, including his own country without causing some serious damage.

I thought the same thing too Chico. Guess that's how they do things over there. They must have some good preservatives to keep him in good condition like that.

They have embalmed him with formaldehyde (I think), but the stench of that chemical can be irritating. He is starting to look grey according to my housemate. His body is exposed for so long with all the crowds flocking to see him, its not surprising that he may give off a bit of odor (with exposure to air). What I dont get is the amount of prayers they are chanting for him. I would think they would have done enough whe he was ill and near death. Pardon my harshness, it wont help him much now. But I guess it is really for his faithful followers to say their goodbyes.

He had a brother, but he died when the pope was a boy. Both of his parents died before he was 20 years old. As far as kids, remeber Catholic priests are to remain celibate, so no he would not have kids. And if he did, I am sure the media would have gotten wind of that years ago, and he probably would not have been pope. His body is the property of the Vatican, not his family (if he has any left). If he does have any family left, I doubt they would make noise, since the Vatican is just following hundreds of years of tradition.

Which explains why it's not for every one. Some people have a need to give their lives completely to God.

Well the new pope is a European, though many thought he would be from a developed country. Cardinal Joseph Ritzinger from Germany has been elected as new Pope. He will be known as Pope Benedict XVI. Funny thing though Ratzinger sounds like a Jewish name.

No surprises here, I figured he would have been chosen since he was a favourite to become the next Pope. Viva il Papa...I hope his leadership will be a good one.

I have read that Cardinal Ratzinger, aka Pope Benedict, is a very fundamentalist Catholic, who is a hardliner for the faith. Apparently some expect his appraoch to be iron fisted compared to Pope John Paul II. He was also quoted sometime ago as saying that other 'faiths were deficient'. That wont go down well if he wants to reach out to other faiths and build a comraderie. Only time will tell.

Yep they say he is a hardliner...we will see how he manages the Papacy. Let pray that God works thru him to do what is right, just and good.

I think throughout papal history, most elected popes have not been under 65. Even still thay have to have put in alot of years as a a Cardinal or Bishop, to even be considered Pope material.

There are a number of pre-requisites for the job, including the age; Papal candidates have to be between the ages of 60 and 80, they have to have a command of French, English and Spanish. There are more requirements that have been laid down in Vatican Law.
Oh, I read this in Angels & Demons by Dan Brown (the author of The DaVinci Code :)

Actually I think they are trying to avoid too young a person so he won't reign as long as Pope JP11
