An early morning Fire today has severly damaged portions of the Grenada Boys' Secondary School (GBSS). The fire which was observed at around 7:30AM this morning quickly spread, destroying everything in its path. The school's reconstructed IT lab (which got new Computers only yesterday was totally destoyed.

see the Pics ... (http://www.spiceislandertalkshop.com/cgi-bin/talkrec.cgi?submit=lt&fid=f1&msg_num=345907)

Sadness me to see this happen to my old school. I am an old boy of GBSS (1997-2002)

Chicokid I am so sorry to hear what happened. Did anyone get hurt, I hope no one did? But you mentioned that the school just got new computers yesterday, wow, now that is a coincidence if I ever saw one. I hope it was merely an accident.

Accident? I just heard that electrical faults HAS BEEN RULED OUT AS A POSSIBILITY of causing the fire (since I understand that the upper portion that burnt didn't have electricity installed as yet :icon_eek: ). Meaning, the fire appears to have been deliberatly set by somone! If that is the case, whoever did this probably set the fire sometime between the night security leaving the compound and the time the janitor arrived in the morning (around 7AM)

Some of the classes in the barracks (wooden buildings) were demolished in Hurricane Ivan leaving the school about 70% damaged. Those classes were held under tents donated by the UNESCO. Now the "new" block is severly damaged by the fire as well. Eight class rooms including new IT lab, Lunch room and the social science staff room was destroyed

This is the second time GBSS was gutted by fire. Last time was around 1993 when the principal's office was totally destroyed by fire. Minor as compared to what happened today.

I was thinking it was not an accident with the info you provided, but I did not want to jump the gun to much. But if it was arson, I hope they catch the idiot and he or she does some hard time. I am sure thatwill be a serious setback particulalry with the effects of Ivan still looming. Some people just demented sometime.

Even more sad is that many of the students SBA projects (20% of CXC) were corrected and present in the staffroom that burnt. Info Tech SBAs as well as lack of an IT lab will also set back students that have to complete their IT studies for CXC. Even worst would be the students with NO access to computers at home :icon_cry:

The students already lost about 1 - 2 months of school because of Ivan, now this :icon_cry:

Perhaps the fire was meant to smokescreen some robbery? Have all the new computers been accounted for?

My only question is why would supposed educated and sound individuals do something as stupid and asinine as setting fires for fun. And if students are doing this they are only hurting themsleves in the long run, becasue they need the school more than anyone else. What happened to dem days when a good cut a** put the fear of God in ya, so that one would not even think of doing such a thing. :eusa_pray

It just shows you the mentality of modern day students and young people in general, especially among the men. I was actually in town tonite and two guys almost stabb each other. Is that conflict resolution? No! Now the easier solution would be to walk away and forget about it. Safer for all :)

And yes there are students who would seek pleasure in burning down a whole school. They think that they are hurting the teachers and the principals but they only hurting themselves. The teachers and principal got their education already so doing things to spite teachers is ridicule. The students are the ones needing the education.

School on fire on April 19th 2005. Click HERE (http://www.spiceislandertalkshop.com/cgi-bin/talkrec.cgi?submit=lt&fid=f1&msg_num=345907)

Same school on fire today, June 9th, 2005..nearly two months later. See the new pics HERE (http://www.spiceislandertalkshop.com/talkshop/messages/355088.html)

Only 2 months ago, half of the "good" part of the school burnt. Now the other half is gone too. The school was 70% destroyed in Ivan. Now the whole school gone now. This time was the Chemistry, Biology, Integrated science labs, the temporary staff room and the Drawing room (description based on what I saw in the pics)

It seems like the arsonist returned to finish the job :eusa_naug

The Government announced that it will seek help from persons in the USA and Britain to determine the cause of both fires.

As for the school, temporary buildings are being set up to accomodate the students in new classrooms as well as the location for CXC exams.

I do hope that these students recover mentally from these experiences. To have a hurricane go with your roof and even your books. I lost quite a couple of my school books during the hurricane and to have your school 70% demolished in the same hurricane. Then to have not one BUT TWO FIRES destroying your whole school within six weeks. That's a very hard hit. The only thing that is left in that school is an auditorium currently under reconstruction and a roofless bathroom.

I do hope and pray that the students are psychologically ready for their exams and not let these experiences disrupt their concentration.

That's y i said i hope they provide counselling for the students. The Columbine students got counselling, these students should too.

Other than the government, seeking funds from foreigners, is there any public fund set up so Caribbean nationals can contribute? i am seriously interested in helping out. look that up for me Chico.

It seems like the person who started this fire may have had some kind of problem with the teaching staff. I'm sure they should be investigating all these areas. The thing is this person has caused so much distruction to the whole school, pupils have worked so hard and are now letf with out important pieces of work.

Hopefully they will catch them.

The Government announced that it will seek help from persons in the USA and Britain to determine the cause of both fires.

Based on the investigations conducted by the experts, it was proven today that the cause of both fires on April 19th and again on June 9th was Arson

I hope they catch the person(s) responsible.

Ok so both fires at the GBSS gone into politics now. According to one newspaper, Government officials have sought to blame the opposition for incited persons to set the school ablaze
