I saw Ray a few weeks ago and I had ssen the Oscars just a few days before and I just was wondering, Is there any other way for a Black actor/actress to gain some respectability in the film industry than playing a major historical Black person? If you any clue, just let me know.

Yes, all you have to do is get naked and straggle Billy Bob Thorton (I like Halle, but that was such a bad performance and an even worse plot). But what is wrong with playing a real life character. It can garner an actor/actress the greatest accolades of their career, particularly if their performance is spot on like the real character. Even white actors and actresses are getting accolades for doing bio's. Look at Charlise Theron, Hillary Swank, etc. I think this is just the climate in Hollywood now. Everyone wants to play a real character, put on 100 lbs or loose it, change themselves physically to prove that they are dedicated to the art.

As far as Black actors/actresses receiving accolades for playing fictional characters, that is going to take a serious change in the Black film industry, and a change in the mindset of the Academy and Academy voters. You cant expect to get an Oscar for Booty Call, and at the same time, those in the Academy must get pass their give em one every few years mentality so we can shut the NAACP up. A good performance is a good performance despite skin color. I still to this day believe that Angela Bassett should have gotten an Oscar for "What's Love got to do with it", ironically a Tina Turner Biography. She was brilliant in that performance, and unfortunately may never have another critically acclaimed performance in her career, (hoepfully she will).
