I thought they gave up on music?? I am not a POP fan but they did make some good singles in the 90's, I wonder if they can do it again since their competitor NSYNC has vanished?

The 'BackStreet Boys' should be men by now. 'Boyz to Men' best of all time though in my opinion ;)

I listened to their album, and I gotta tell ya...
...it's a MASSIVE Upgrade from what you're familiar with. The boys have grown up both in terms of their sound and lyrically. Gone is the 'Pop' sound of electronically simulated guitars and orchestra hits that nSync made popular and Britney Spears still thrives on. BSB sounds more like a softer version of Linkin' Park, or a male group version of what Kelly Clarkson's music sounds like. If you can imagine Kelly Clarkson's "Breakaway" or "Since You've Been Gone" being sung by the Backstreet Boys, then you have an idea of what they now sound like.
Now their music is focussed primarily on powerballads (those heavy-metal like guitar riffs made famous in songs like Linkin' Park's "Somewhere I Belong") with what I would call TOP-NOTCH harmonizing from the Boys. I can even hear the Bass vocals in their songs coming out powerful and strong. I imagine the bass vocals were recorded separately to get that distinctively rich powerballad sound. There are no songs on the album like "Rock Your Body" or "Larger Than Life". All of them are hard rock infused versions of Ballads like "The Shape of My Heart" and "Show me the feeling of being Lonely".
Again I say, there are NO Pop songs on this album!
For the RnB lovers out there, you will be blown away by their distinctive R. Kelly-like RnB selections. Truly amazing vocals - they even got the traditional 2/4 R-n' B beat down nicely. Listening from afar off, you might mistake them for Boyz 2 Men. Trust me, it was surprisingly well done.
Needless to say, the album is all killer and no filler. Backstreet has stayed true to the melodic minor chord fluctuations that made songs like "Quit Playing Games with My heart" so catchy. All of the melody remains intact - but with a far more gritty and mature sound. If you like Kelly Clarkson, Jimmy Eat World, Alanis Morissette or Avril Lavigne, you will definitely love this Backstreet Boys album.
It Frickin' Rawks! http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y142/xenocrates/Smilies/2thumbs.gif

i listen to "incomplete''.....and I must say...it's a really good song. kinda reminds me of evanescence's "immortal". Really nice vocals by AJ and Nick (I could only make out those two distincly). Are they the original members? All five of them? My Gf got the album for me so when i get it from her...I'll let you all know how good it really is!

Here's a track listing:
1. Climbing The Walls (Power Ballad / Rock) <==Beautiful opener. Shows off BSB's new sound.
2. Poster Girl (Break-Beat/ R 'n B) <==AWESOME Track! (damn catchy!)
3. Beautiful Woman (Hard Rock) <==If you love rock, this track is a killer
4. Forces of Nature (Rock Ballad) <==The Ultimate NSync Killer. AWESOME vocals. Bar None. Boy Band male vocals at its finest.
5. Incomplete (Power Ballad) <==Their first single, badass powerballad
6. The Unloved (Rock Ballad) <==AWESOME Track! Holy Crap! :icon_eek:
7. Never Gone (Ballad)
8. Love Is (R 'n B) <- I'm not big on softcore R'nB, but if you like R. Kelly or Brian McKnight, you'll love this
9. Over Her (Ballad) <- reminds me of Spandu Ballet's "True"
10. Color My World (Ballad) <==I Predict this is going to be an Anthem with lots of airplay, lovely tune
11. Memories (Ballad) <==Ditto
If I were to pick my top 5 favourite tracks, they'd be (in order of decreasing awesomeness)
1. Incomplete - The perfect blend of guitar powerchords, a complete cello line accentuating the alto notes, violin backup on tenor chords, balladic vocal harmony and pseudo-rock progression. It's tracks like this that remind us that NSync is no comparison. None of that orchestra hit synthezier bull*****. Play it loud.
2. The Unloved - This is one hell of a powerballad. If I heard this track first, I'd prolly love it more than Incomplete. I consider them a tie in pure awesomeness. The bridge is initiated with the boys swooning seamlessly from the main chorus into a minor chord - you don't know where the chorus ended and where the bridge began - AWESOME... A simply awesome frickin' track. This is a tune you want to play loud and hard. Especially if you like rock ballads set to breakbeat rythms. The Bass chords and sweet harmony of male vocals are worth the price of admission alone. Whip out your sub-woofer for this one...warn the neighbours.
3. Beautiful Woman - Backstreet Boys goes hard rock with break beats (checkout the guitar riffs!). It has to be heard to be understood. The power chords are so deep and enveloping. You need a sub-woofer on this tune. If you don't dig rock music, skip it - It's pretty freakin' hard like that.
4. Poster Girl - Can you understand what the word "Catchy" means? If you hear it once, it will be stuck your head for a while.... a looong while. I love the break beat in this tune coupled with distinctively Boyz 2 Men-esque vocal pacing. I can see lots of people dancing to this tune in their cars or in their bathroom - it's just that damn addictively catchy. Sweet tune.
5. Color My World - I love piano. I love male vocals - especially the harmony with that off-beat tenor in the background taking a high note when everyone else is taking different minor and major notes in the melody. If NSync could make tracks like this on a regular basis, I'd give them ratings. But this song (like Forces of Nature and Never Gone) is one of the many reasons why I think Backstreet Boys is the ultimate pop culture, all male, vocal icon. Period. Pass the grammy please.
If you get these 5 tracks first, I guarantee you'll agree with me that Backstreet Boys has definitely upped the ante in their music. The rest of the tracks only serve to showoff their vocals, their domination of R 'n B and that they are the true masters of the ballad. Truly Badass. :icon_mrgr

Link me if U want the album. I must say that I am a huge fan from way back in the day. This album is great, I like the new sound. They havent lost a step during the time off.
I doubt they dd this for money, they made enough to retire a long time ago. One tour is enough to retire on, and these guys did countless tours.

Um...uh....gee thanx Xeno. It's something in the air. Arch and I get along ok here....but in TechJam..it's a different thing....maybe it's the mood...much more relaxing...."You follow me?"
I listen to all types of music. Even some punk rock, grunge and garage. I also like some techno...well those i'm exposed to. The more popular classical tunes...those i'm exposed to.....jazz....
It's all about the melody, the harmony and ofcourse....the BEAT!!!!!!

I want to know which of the boys got divorced...(i'm being mean) but they dropped off the pop scene after 2 of them got married. Gurls around the world felt betrayed! they were all happy when Paris and Nick broke up....now what on earth possessed them to come back (the group that is)...unnu know the name ah the album, when i read it i was like "Really? Ya'll good at hide and seek."
But honestly I was a big fan. have all their cds.looking forward to this one

Exactly Drew. Nick is the youngest and at the time...when everyone else was seriosu with their girlfirends...he was still a kid...so he was the only one that went solo....now the relationship foundation has been laid...so they can get back to business!

If you check their website's blog in early March to April, you'll see that the reason they sat out was to:
...allow the pop scene to die a natural death with the disbandment of NSync...
since:
...[we] wanted to go in new directions with our music, but the Jive label wasn't comfortable with what we had in mind given NSync's popularity...
The Jive label is what created the sound of pop in the late 90's. Backstreet realised that while NSync was popular for their frenetic pop sound, BSB noticed that the tracks they released that did consistently well on the charts were all ballads (Quit Playing Games with my heart, Show Me the Meaning, etc.). They wanted to take a direction that Jive thought would make them unpopular at the time. Since they didn't want to be in direct competition with NSync, it was best to wait until the inevitable (their disbandment) and allow new artists like Avril Lavigne to popularize the style they wanted to employ.
It was a waiting game for the most part. If you know of rock groups like Van Halen, Guns 'n Roses and several others, you'll realise that they do this sorta thing ALL the time. They go off the scene for a while when the type of music they specialize in is starting to become less popular. They then re-invent themselves and return to the scene with a new sound. Guns 'n Roses has done it twice since the 1960's. They're the longest surving rock group of all time, because they consistently reinvent themselves.
This is the same tactic that BSB has employed. They never disbanded. If you listened to their most previous album, "Black and Blue" you will notice how succinctly they've started to clung to the ballad sound. But NSync and the Pop sound had to fiz out completely before they could return as a boy band. People are sick of the pop sound now (because it's been played to death on the radios - Britney Spears isn't helping).
If you thought it was because the money was done - you should note that the boys are all still millionnaires. Check their website and dispell your doubts. ;) It was for the love of the game, and longing for old times.
