Right now the stock market seems to be going through a little slump. Stock prices have fallen. Supreme Ventures Ltd. and First Global Bank are set to list by the end of the year. Should be interesting.

Drew
June 13, 2005, 10:54 PM
can buy u quite few stocks nuhsenutten.
well bck, the low prices indicate that its time to buy and build up your portfolio or start one if you haven't already. now is also a good time, because alot of companies are paying out dividends, or going to be paying out shortly.
definately looking forward to both companies ipos. we'll see what happens with that.

1) Where do you buy stock? - You need an agent - ask someone who you can trust to give you the name of an agent.
2) Why do I need a Broker? - You need one since you are not allowed to trade on the stock market, unless you are license broker yourself.
3) You get money when dividend is declared which is annually and in very rare cases semi-annually, altho I do not know of it ever happening in Jamaica. You also get money when you sell you shares. However, bare in mind that you can make a profit or a lost depending on the price of the share at the time you sell.
4) You need to follow to stock market carefully if youare going to invest. You also need a very good agent who can advise you when you need to buy and sell.

i dont understand this stock echange thing. how people mek money off it?
pogi_2nr
August 31, 2005, 10:05 AM
People make money off of it easily
They buy some stocks, the value of the stocks go up, then they sell it. :)
You lose money the same way..
They buy some stocks, the value of the stocks go down, then they sell it. :(
stocks are pretty low now, y'all think its a good idea to buy? gotta make that paper :)

Why is it that the jamaica stock market seem to run a bit different from most other counties? For example in the states whenever companies release new products, change CEOs, etc.. one would expect to see some changes in the stock prices, depending on how the investors view the changes, but in jamaica there seems to be no changes. I saw this with lasco, C&W etc.. Or is it that i'm not understanding something here?

The Jamaican stock market is plague with what I like to call ‘sharks’ they are investors who don’t really look at the company’s investments and strategy (long term plan etc.) what they do is come together and buy a lot of a particular stock thereby spiking the price of the stock then when it reaches a certain amount and a lot of persons buy it up they sell what they bought and the stock price start to fall and you (the little man) lose a lot of money.
Most private sector company will tell you that they are making huge profits each year (buying government paper) but yet still their stock price fluctuate (up today, down tomorrow) and there is no logical reason. The best way to make money out of the stock market in Jamaica is to have a good ‘shark’ who knows the other 'sharks'.

There is far too much insider trading going on in the J'can SE. Half of the stuff that goes on in our SE would get people prosecuted and disbarred in the US. Those Sharks Justice speaks of are the only persons who stand to make significant gain from SE in Ja. If you don't know a shark, then you don't know jack and you'll only make tu'pence in comparison to what is being made.
Don't you guys ever wonder why when a new drop in stock prices is anticipated, the instant you go to buy, a large quantity has already been bought up? It doesn't even seem to matter how early you get on to it. If you don't know a shark, trading is almost pointless.
...almost
Do I know a Shark? No. I know two of them.
One of them is set to retire soon - he's 24.
Go figure.

I own piece of courts, jmmb, loj, seprod, mayberry investments, db&g and soon to be supreme ventures :)

nice line up pogi. u plan to invest in spl. that one will pass me, good luck with that though.
i guess you suppose to be vex about mil's performance don't it. i know i am. :(
the entire stock exchange is losing strength leina. which is the time to buy.

January 27, 2006, 07:51 AM
me criss still I havent lost any money off of mayberry yet I bought them just
after they hit rock bottom even though they look like they want to go back
there now. Analysts predict it will take about 5 years before MIL gets back
to their IPO price heh, poor bastards who got greedy and didnt get out in time.
I guess people didnt know MIL wasnt a stable company.
SVL isnt really a good investment either, I am not investing as much money
as I wanted to in them after seeing their prospectus :eusa_snoo. I plan to
take out my initial investment in them after I can get about 40% in capital
appreciation then sell the rest after it peaks just to be safe.

Is there a way to get updated information sent to ur phone/pda. On Db&G site they have a ticker. Could that info be sent to a blackberry or any other phone?
Also need a little help with the jargon.
trading on the JSE saw 7 stocks advancing, 9 declining and 12 trading firm. whats going on here??
Drew
January 28, 2006, 09:37 AM
7 stocks prices gone up. 9 went down and 12 stocks prices didn't change.
and yes virus, i believe db&g and ncb does it. check their sites for confirmation though.
pogi the entire financial sector is an unstable set. jmmb is a good one. but not loj.

The numbers for supreme ventures IPO is in and it is not pretty, the over priced stock got less that 40% take up. That’s not even the bad thing; I use to view NCB stock as a good long term stock but now they going to have to dig themselves out of Dyoll and supreme ventures, not looking good for NCB worst since their stock have been in a zig zag motion on the exchange hovering in the 17 dollar range.
NCB is now going to have to take up the other 60+% of the remaining supreme venture stocks, I can see it now, NCB coming to the market with supreme ventures over priced stock (4.81) and then its going to drop to about 2+ like Mayberry.

Stock market kinda sticky right now. Alternative investment options are attracting much of the funds out there now.
Drew
February 13, 2006, 09:45 AM
i am not surprised about supreme ventures at all. bad price and bad timing is what cost them.
bck i'll say now is the time to buy for the long term. everything is nice and low. but if you're a quick seller then look elsewhere.

Remeber the stock market is all about how you take risk. Are you a risk taker or are you risk averse?
My suggestion, is that people view stocks as a long term investment. (at lease 5 yrs). Case in point look at Grace I know somenoe who bought grace at $30 and Grace went up to $120 or more last year. (Over a 4 year period he more than doubled his investment in Grace). Alot off us here might not have the money to play like the sharks nor do we have inside information. But we can still build. The old saying ever likkle mek a muckkle is still true. Some simple things to look for when you thing of buing a stock.
1) A expert told me dont worry so much on the prices as 1 share at $100 is not much diffrent from 100 shares at $1 more important :
- Look at the balance sheet and see how much cash the company has.
- Look at what percentage of thier cost are administrative vs operational
- Look how heavily capitalized by debt they are. (e.g. Alot of ppl missed this with the Mayberry IPO)
- For companies already on the Exchange, look at their earnins per share, this is prob the best indicator if it will be worth your while.
- Stay uptodate with activites in the company you investing in. (e.g. stable management, expansion into markets etc etc.)
Now is a good time to buy, even if is just 10,000 u have, I foy can wait it will be worth you while.

Supreme Ventures is taking a beating on the stock market. The stock went down 15%* the first day of trading. All who had bought that stock must be crying now because their money is worth 15% less than what they had bought it for.
*15% is the maximum a stock can depreciate for a day before trading is halted for that stock.

I notice now that FSC has started clamping down on the alternative investment schemes, that the stock market is picking up again. Mayberry gone to $5.00 a share, plus the preference share offerings from Mayberry and JMMB were snapped up heartily. Pan Caribbean is issuing their own preference shares now.
People looking places to put their "Cash Plus" money now.
Interesting ...
