View Full Version : What would make the site more interesting?

I'm curious as to what you guys think would make the site more interesting and livelier. Persons are joining (thanks :) ), but what will it take for the non-posters to start posting? Of course there are certain topics/material that can be ruled out as we're keeping the site clean but sociable ;)
Let me have your thoughts.

After reading the post on the tech site, I thought of some suggestions to improve the quality of Caribyard:
1. Create a homepage instead of using the forum as the opener. You can include certain stuff on the homepage (note other points) as well as a link to the forum
2. Is it possible to put some information about each of the Caribbean countries like brief history, maps, etc...(I can help out readily with Grenada :) )
3. Do you guys know of persons who have their own websites. Probably you can ask then to place a banner/logo of Caribyard on their site (negoiate to see if you can pull it off for FREE)
4. Look for Caribbean groups (and other groups if interested) in MSN, Yahoo, etc...and advertise the site there too.
5. Advertise in other online forums like this one.
Benefits: Increased Traffic to Caribyard. You will attract regional businessses and events to advertise on your site hence bringing in more revenue to the site :D

Nice suggestions Chicokid. The long-term plan for CaribYard is to have the frontpage as you've described, but as you may expect it takes time to design, develop and implement. The plan was to use the forums as the stimulator to first build traffic and support upon which we may then build and grow the site's features and content.
Having frontpage content is also not as easy as it sounds because it has to be dynamically changing, if not visitors will get bored. Getting dynamic content can also be a challenge.
So since we're on this topic, what kind of content would you like to see on the homepage?

Posted above Chris info on the Caribbean, about events little titbits of history stuff like that... There can be a vacation section also that showcases some of the cool spots in the caribbean islands... I can be a source of information for visitors to the Caribbean... This can lead to major revenue I think, you know the hoteliers may want to think of adverts on the home page...
Just my few ramblings...

Why not get some UWI students doing Caribbean studies or something to post articles and writeups on the site? That should be good content for the site apart from the forums.

August 15, 2004, 05:02 PM
Greatis kinda expanded my idea a bit. Nice one from BlackCryptoKnight.
I was also thinking you could have a "photo album" section. Like you may wanna have a monthly/weekly pic from each island. That way the homepage will be interchange so visitors won't get bored. (You can store other pics in an archive)
You can also add online radio stations from each island. I have a list of some in most islands.
How about a Caribbean Recipe page. You can used some of the stuff featured in the forum about food and place it there. This can also be done on a weekly/monthly basis.
ALL IDEAS I HAVE FOR NOW...ENJOY ;)
Chris

Do you think having a Spanish and/or French version of the site would be good? This could facillitate people from the French and Spanish speaking Caribbean islands joining in on the fun.
To start off with, maybe having links to some of the Translation websites would be good (maybe get them to advertise on the site).

Anybody from the Spanish Speaking Caribbean willing to assist with that ;)

The foreign language idea will depend heavily on finding a good moderator(s) speaking that language. We wouldn't want certain discussions taking place in a different language and we're naively smiling along with it now would we ;)

I think you should have a teen forum area for the young people. Area for them to connect, because i see you have some younger members. And also a parenting forum so people can get advice on parenting. Or people who interested in just knowing about parenting. Also some type of advice forum for people who have some personal issue and need advice. Like Dear Abby, type thing you know. More suggestions for ya huh.(lol) :)

Most of you would have realised by now that there have been some changes to the forums. Specifically, there is a new Arts & Entertainment forum with Movies & TV shows, music and literature (books, poetry, short stories, folk tales, etc.) as sub-forums. What we've done is taken several suggestions and implemented them as neatly as possible.
Keep making those suggestions as we're continually evaluating and assessing them for implementation :)
Thanks.

You dont like my constructive criticism? :eusa_thin Sure I market the site to other Bahamians, but its whatever rocks your boat at the end of the day.
What I was trying to say was that more technical enhancements wont necessarily mean more participation. So if current memebers can up their participation, and post some more interesting topics, it might just attract more people along with marketing the site by word of mouth etc.

So the site is taking a while to pick up, that is the way it is sometimes. We have had interesting topics on here and we have seen ppl come and dare I say go, because they certainly do not stay. However, we just have to keep at it, continue to discuss interesting topics and spread the word:)
BTW...it would seems like we need a relationship thread with all the relationship topics:) However, I am not sure it would be a good idea since ppl may think it's website for singles ;)

Okay here is what I am thinking
1. Give the site a different look a more modern one the square thing is out
(If the software allows it)
2. A mobile caribyard, (mobile.caribyard.com) this would sure increase the amount of persons that will be able to post.
3. A Caribbean Dictionary (Example, Duppy - ghost)
4. Maybe a page for top news making the Caribbean.
5. Chat room would be both good and it can be bad as it can decrees the total posts that are made in forums

The challenge with it is actually a technology problem - one that will integrate (use existing membership data) without requiring changes to the database.

There is another forum I use that has a chat room, it's mostly used during the nights tho, and ppl still post while chatting. It's hard for most ppl to chat during the day, but they can chat at nights when they get home.
You could probably use your to open it in the nights for a certain period of time.
