I recently received the following information and thought that I'd pass it along to fellow drivers in Jamaica. I'm sure that many of us weren't aware of this.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Speed limits vary from place to place across the island. These range from 50-80 km and up to 110kmph on the Old Harbour Bypass for instance. There is an allowance of 17kmph which the law permits for motorists to drive over the speed limit. A motorist should therefore not be stopped or charged for driving speeds between 51-67 kmph in a 50kmph zone or between 81-97 in an 80 kmph Zone.

A breakdown of the fines for breaching the 50kmph speed limit is as follows:

Between 68 and 84 kmph the fine is $5,000.00 plus two demerit points
Between 85 and 100km, the fine is $7,000.0 plus four demerit points
Between 101 and 134kmph, the fine is $10,000.00 plus six demerit points
Over 135kmph, the driver is charged with dangerous driving and his/her licence will be suspended for a period of six months to a year depending on the discretion of the sitting judge.

A breakdown of the fines for breaching the 80kmph speed is as follows:

97-114kmph, the fine is $5,000.00 plus two demerit points
Between 115-125kmph, the fine is $7,500 plus four demerit points
Between 125-134kmph, the fine is $10,000 plus six demerit points

If the driver exceeds 135kmph, he or she is charged with dangerous driving and his/her licence will be suspended for a period of six months to a year depending upon the discretion of the sitting judge.

Good info Chris. I knew about the 17kmph or 10mph allowance over the speed limit.

I was driving at the border of that allowance in a 50kmph speed zone when i got pulled over. Cop said I was going 12mph over the speed limit which was about 2 mph over the allowance. And I got ticketed. My first and last. :-)

Since then, I drive about 2mph below the allowance for each speed zone. It's fast enough for me. :)

Here in Canada, you are charged a fine as well as it will reflect on your insurance. Anything you can be fined for will also hit your insurance.

I may be wrong, but I don't think that is the case in Jamaica.

You are right Chris. Here everything is basically link so they can do that.

I have been pulled over in Jamaica for speeding but was able to talk my way out of it ;)

Well lucky for me then since I never had to hand over a cent. If I had to I would rather take my ticket and the demerit points than pay off a police man. We have enough corruption without me adding to it :)

True. The cycle has to stop somewhere so let it stop with us.

Chris thanks for the info, but its a bit late for me.

I got one of the worst tickets to date. I was going to the airport and on michael manley highway or blvd, I see 3 lanes so I am thinking well its a highway so the limit is 80km, I was there in second gear going my merry way, upon reaching a corner I see 3 guys jump into the rd with them hands up, So I was thinking that these guys r nuts, only to realise they were Po pos. One had one of the new speed guns. I pull over and almost mash on eof them toe. He came over, showed me the gun and asked if I see the speed it was showing. I responded by saying yes, and??? The man hiss him teeth and ask for my papers. Write up my ticket and went his way.

10 gran ticket !!! I was doing 115 in a 50 km zone. I then called the po po bwoy over. I asked him what the limit was, he said 50, I asked him 50 on a major highway? he said yes. Then him smile and said that the 80 zone starts around the corner. Needless to say that I was rather upset, but it was my fault.

PS The darn gun still had the plastic on the screen

They caught alot of people with the 52 guns they got the other day and them stopping like crazy. On the Bypass they have speed traps. Speed traps everywhere, Beware or accept ur tickets like a man. Before them go fight crime them worrying about speeding. More proof that our government is not Prioritising.

Damn this was my first post :eusa_whis

Something I learned from someone recently ... the local cops don't setup speedtraps in the 80km zones ;)

:icon_ques Hey Chris are you sure that info is correct. I could swear that I have seen them on some of those country roads where the speed limit is 80.

I dont think Chris meant it as fact per say, but when u think about it, it makes alot of sense. People dont normally go over 80, but people alwasy go over 50. The day I got my ticket, I tried driving at 50km and it was extremely difficult to keep the car under 50. Hence y the chances r higher to get a ticket in the 50km zone when compared to the 80km zone.

It was told this by a senior officer. As Mitchie said, it's not a rule, just that they reap greater returns in the 50km zones ;)

Nastro, I am not sure how you can make such a statement. Do you monitor all jamaican drivers on the road and thus came to that conclusion? Or are you saying that to stur up a conversation? :)

There is no good reason for anyone to speed on the roads. None. Good drivers don't speed and break the law. Unless the definition of a "good driver" is being able to dodge the police while still driving at high speeds and not getting into an accident.

The more you speed the higher the risk of getting into an accident and killing someone.

People need to stop gambling with peoples lives when they decide they want to speed. They need to get into drag racing or speed racing out on the speed circuits (or whatever they call them) to do that.

I'm here in the Fl and a tell you. There is no speed limit. I do when it calls for. But if I am in a rush, I got peoples to do and places to see...no need to waste time.

Now now people, lets stay on topic here. ;)

Just the other day I read in the papers that there was a 3 car crash, not sure exactly where. Two cars were racing and then hit into an uncoming vehicle which was a police vehicle with a constable and 2 other officers in there. This was about 10pm it said.

Oh yeah, the joy and fun of speeding and racing against some other punk. I'm sure next time they will swerve a little sooner out of the way. Just need to get thier reflexes a little sharper. *kiss teet*

Hmmmm rather interesting incident there Arch.

Its really hard to stay below the speed limit. Just today I was on trafalgar rd and a yute in a starlet pull up beside me revving up him car, so I was listening to music and his revving interrupted that. Normally I would smile and let him go his ways, but then I saw that he had a wheelsjamaica sticker. Now my whole perception changed. I decided to pleasure him a a nice butt whooping, or so I hoped. Anyways light changed and we're off to cut a long story short I whooped his butt with my stock car, when I was turning off he beeped me and I replied.

Reason for this story - Male Ego - This is the reason of most of the speeding on our roads.
