View Full Version : Catching chicken pox

From I was a young lad, I heard that you CAAAAAAAAN'T catch chicken pox more than once. But I had it 3 times!!! I know a few persons who also have had it more than once.

And when I tell people I had it more than once, they don't believe me. They say it must be something else, but it can't be chicken pox.

Where do these "nameless doctors" get thier knowledge from concerning chicken pox?
Why shouldn't you be able to catch it more than once?

So they say. A sickness is a sickness, whether they caught it once or not. But I've had it only once.

I did a little Googling and this is what I came up with ...

Chickenpox is a common disease caused by the varicella-zoster virus (VZV), which is part of the herpesvirus family.
Although it's more common in kids under the age of 15, anyone can get chickenpox. A person usually has only one episode of chickenpox in his or her lifetime. But the virus that causes chickenpox can lie dormant within the body and can cause a different type of skin eruption later in life called shingles, also referred to as herpes-zoster.

Zeen Chris. That sounds about right. I mean, the other 2 times I got it, it wasn't as bad as the first time i got the pox. It came and went, as if each time was a milder version of the one before it.

Well, at least I'm glad I caught it while I was young. I heard it's not a nice experience when you catch it as an adult. But I only heard it from these "nameless doctors". ;)

Man you just salt.... :D

Ok....what happened is that your body was not able to create a antigen for the disease. As such, whenever you are exposed to it, you will become succeptible to its effects.

"As such, whenever you WERE exposed to it, you WOULD HAVE become succeptible to its effects."

I don't think I'm going to catch it again.

Never had it, but I wish I did, so that I don't have to worry about it now that I'm grown and about to have kids of my own.

Apparently, getting hit once won't necessarily spare you a second. Like myself, just hope it never comes your way. ;)

- Johno prolly didn't get a booster. The ChickenPox virus can mutate y'know. Every person needs to get immunized, then a booster needs to be applied in early adulthood. This prevents any recurrence for the rest of your natural life.

Your immune system ≠ your child's immune system

Immunization actually inserts a de-activated version of the virus you're being innoculated against. This causes the body to create anti-bodies for that virus (since anti-bodies recognize a virus by it's outer shell, not its contents). Those antibodies would be keyed to your specific DNA, since most viruses adopt the DNA structure of their host.

Therefore:
Since the baby will effectively have it's own DNA, the innoculation of the mother will not have any effect on the child. Furthermore, after a certain point in the gestation period, the foetus never shares T-4 cells or antibodies with it's mother. It becomes its own autonomous living agent.

Hence:
The baby can STILL become infected with chicken pox. That's why you should immunize your baby shortly after it is born. Some hospitals do this automatically. You should also remember that your kid should get a booster when it hits puberty, since it's DNA will start to change again around that time. Consult a health professional to verify this info.
