"I can give you two good reasons!" gripes the son. "I don't like them, and they don't like me!"

His mother places her hands on her hips. "Oh, is that so? Well, I can give you two good reasons why you should go!"

"Oh, yeah, what?" challenges the son.

His mother replies, "First of all, you're fifty-four years old. And second, you're the preacher!"

Yeah, the person who wrote the joke needed to input the age of the son, but putting it as one of the excuses doesn't make sense.

How about somebody rewrite the joke so it mek more sense and be funny at the same time? :D
