Good question. I'd like to know for myself.

I've also heard this moniker. It'd be interesting to gain a regional perspective on this issue. I'm thinking it's the general ignorant attitudes of the populous, or the volume of weed we have growing wild in our bushes, or our comparatively larger tourist economy that we take for granted, or our larger proportions of deportees, or just the fact that many Jamaicans go overseas to the neighbour to the North and give Jamaica (and the rest of the Caribbean) a bad name...
...who knows.

I've heard these sentiments expressed from the Trinidadian and Barbadian perspectives. I knew Jamaicans who studied at UWI in Trinidad who said that the Trini guys dislike the Jamaican guys because they go over there and the Trini girls just rush them.
I've heard from Jamaicans in Barbados, that Jamaicans are perceived to be vey assertive and aggressive which does not sit well with many over there.
This is just anecdotal and it would be great for some Trinis and Bajans to shed some light on the matter. I'd hope there really aren't negative sentiments like that between us.

now this is a rather interesting topic. I have always heard that us Jamaicans are not liked by our caribbean neighbours. I have not been able to put a finger on the exact cause of that, whether it is the bad eggs among us Jamaicans that have caused this dislike (if at all their is a dislike) or it is the other famous one that Jamaicans tend to get all the girls.
I have read once in one of our local newspapers that Trinis and Jamaicans are very competitive. The St. Augustine campus of the UWI is where the story was based, albeit this took place about 20 yrs ago.
It all boiled down to a Trini guy liking a Jamaican girl. However because it was not accepted for a Trini to be with a Jamaican girl in the eyes of the Jamaican men on campus the girl left the Trini guy for peace of mind. There was a rivalry for the women on campus and whether the Jamaicans could get more women than the Trinidadians and vice versa.
The article went further to include our ie(Jamaicans) behaviour or should I say hostility towards homosexuality. The author made reference to the supposed gay march that was supposed to take place in Kingston, saying with our current hostile nature it would not be possible. He then crossed referenced our hostile nature towards homosexuality with that of Trinidads saying that they have accepted the fact that it a persons choice whether they need to be homosexual or heterosexual.
I hope this sheds some light on the topic.

Well I've never even heard of this type of rivalry. But it would be good to find out why it exists. Maybe its our accent, music, women, who knows.

And so much mad people......on the Street, in the stores, Singing on stage about 'head nuh good'. Even the Cows gone mad with this mad cow disease thing. I saw this cow that swore blind that it was a helicopter.
You dress like Americans, write like the British, do carnival like the Brazilians, ride bicycles like Chinese, work for less than your worth like the Indians, block roads like Haitians, war like Iraqis, and some of you go as far as to sell drugs like columbians!!!!

Many years ago, I first heard it said that in some of the other Caribbean islands, Jamaicans are not very well liked. Is this really true? If so, why?
I believe there is some truth to the belief. For whatever reasons, Jamaicans can be very assertive at times, always trying to prove something.
It could be also that there is a difference in cultural expression. I have met quite a few caribbean people, and I find that there is a difference in behavioural patterns. For example, the Barbadian men are less assertive towards to their women, and generally show more respect for the ladies. So when a Jamaican man goes to that country and begins to assert his male dominance over these women, it can pose a serious problem.
Well in the case of the Trinis, its my humble opinion that this animosity between them and us Jamaicans might very well stem from their being simply jealous. I stand to be corrected on that one. Its just a feeling I have. 8)

I don't think that you should pay much attention to the belief that other Caribbean nations dislike Jamaicans. All the Islands have there rivalries which is very different from them hating us. I personally think that Trinis hate Bajans. Trinis and Bajans can't really stand the Guyanese. Jamaicans generally don't see many Guyanese but I have heard a lot of Jamaicans say bad thing about Guyanese. St. Lucians are cool to me. Antuguans are just like Jamaican, they sound like us. Most of it is rivalry.
A lot of Jamaicans feel that Caymanians, Bahamians, People from St. Martin and Burmuda don't really like then. I have never been to any of those island so I can't say but I personally think that that perception comes from how immigration in those Islands treat Jamaicans. Also People form those islands are concerned that Jamaican come their island and take there jobs and men/women. Also remember that Jamaicans are the third most notorious drug runners (behind Colombia and Bahamas).
The common thing I hear is form other islanders is that Jamaicans are rather "forceful", and that's a mild way of saying it. :D . You will agree that you can spot a Jamaican from a mile away right! How many of you have observed check-in for an Air Jamaica flight in a foreign country? You get what I mean. :D
I personally like Trinis. They know how to party. Bajans are cool but they can be a little stiff. Plus they think they speak the "Queens English" and most times I can't understand a word they are saying. That's annoying! :D I guarantee that if you go to any of those islands and listen the radio any time of day you are going to hear a lot of dance hall music! They play more dance hall than we do. Pick any "ordinary dj" and send him to do a show in any of those Island and that show go be sold out before you know it! On the whole I have gotten a lot of love from the Trinis, Bajans, Guyanese, St Lucians, Vincentians and Grenadians that I have met.
Don't allow your perceptions to hamper your island understanding because the Caribbean has some truly wonderful people. Understand that they have their own mis perceptions about us.

I have encountered people who say that Jamaicans are "cocky" and that they hate when people from different countries identify them as Jamaicans, when they are not. My question is why do u think people from different countries often classify every dark skin person as Jamaicans, and why is it sooo hard for them to understand that Jamaicans are of mixed culture too? I met a caucasian who said people find it hard to believe he is Jamaican.
Chris
July 22, 2004, 09:17 PM
Well Foxy Kay, because Jamaica is one of, if not the most popular Caribbean country, foreigners naturally associate Jamaica with every Caribbean person. Ah so we large :icon_mrgr (my cockiness being displayed ;) ). Secondly, foreigners think that all Caribbean persons and by extension, Jamaicans, are dark skinned. Believe it or not, some of them think we speak Spanish because we're near to Latin America
Foxy Kay
July 23, 2004, 08:37 PM
On a serious note, do you think Jamaica should make spanish a second language and be taught in every kindergarten, primary, high school & university? Seeing that Jamaica was once inhabited by the Spaniards before the British came along. Back to the original discussion....I heard that there are some Trinidadians that do not like Jamaicans...is that true, if not, why is it that people want to start a rif between the two countries.
Chris
July 23, 2004, 09:20 PM
Yeah, I did hear that Trindadians don't like Jamaicans, yet they like to buy-out our companies  I don't know the basis of this dislike, probably a Trinidadian can shed some light on this for us?
Regarding Spanish ... yeah, it's a popular language especially with many of our neighbours. A second language can only serve to strengthen the knowledge of our children so I say why not?

I cant agree with this sentiment. It is unfair to limit the potential, the value, and the appeal for recognition of the Caribbean/WestIndies to one particular country. Yes Jamaica has a very rich and the most globally recognized culture in this region, no one can dispute that, but the Caribbean is a melting pot of different cultural identities, that I think we should all learn to appreciate and recognize as Caribbeans/West Indians. I enjoy the music that Bob Marley made, but the identity and culture of the Caribbean/West Indies, and even Jamaica for that matter I dare say does not reside alone on his legacy.

I've read all your remarks and there was sth disturbing. Ain't it starnge that only Jamaicans have answered so far?
Anyway, as a girl from an non English speaking island of the Caribbean, I had never heard of this supposed dislike.
No seriously, the problem is that thanks or because of Jamaica the other West Indians islands are completely forgotten and it's worse when you live in a French speaking island. In Guadeloupe we imitated Jamaica for long as for music, dressing and general behaviuor but now we have come to adapt those things to our history. We are now proud of our cultural, historical background.
But I can tell u that down here Jamaican boys are sort of a mysterious, appealing and utterly sexy fantasy.

jamaicans probably occupy both extremes of current thinking in the west indies and farther abroad. here in the uk most black people from the caribbean are often asked if they are jamaicans as if all those other great islands are unknown.with regards to negative news jamaica occupies the number 1 spot.on the other hand a great deal of people secretly or openly aspire to talk and behave like jamaicans whether for good or ill.with regards to the speaking of espanol i say great idea, get it on!

you raise some thought provoking points of view "GREATIS"and i can see a pattern to this rivalry you speak of between "trinis & jamis".although we are a diverse peoples i think this applies mainly to those of us of african descent.from the caribbean to europe and back to our ancestral homeland of africa we retain a tribal instinct that seems to have a strong hold on our relationships between each other.from sound system rivalry to all out genocide we allow our emotional instability to get the better of us all to often.if we manage to ever get our act together we could become a quality force to be reckoned with or is this too much to hope for in this scheme of things. black uhuru sang "positve we've got to think positve".

This topic has been around for along time and how true it is I am not sure since todate all the Trinis I have met are very nice people.
There is another factor we need to look at that could explain this problem. When we say Trinis do not like Jamaicans, who exactly are we referring to? I ask this question simply because Trinidad is inhabitted by 2 main groups of ppl:
Blacks
Indians
There are other groups there but they are in the minority. The Indian population is slightly larger than the Blacks and Black Trinidadians have their own problems with racism from the Indian population. So is there a possibility that this dislike of Jamaicans is primarily from the Indians or is it an all around dislike...ie most Trinis disliking Jamaicans for whatever reason.
On a personal note I have been to Trinidad and I one of my closest friends and second mom is a Trinidadian. Here in Canada another of my friend is Trinidadian.
I also met a lady who I thought was Jamaican because of her accent and she informed me that she sounded Jamaican simply because all her friends are Jamaican. She went on to point out that she herself does not hangout with other Trinis and that all her close friends are Jamaicans.
I truly see no evidence to suggest that Trinis do not like Jamaicans and vice versa, but that is my personal experience.

Well I think most Jamaicans are not liked by other WestIndians because of course the Jamaicans are quite differnt from the rest. As a Jamaican, I can say we are very proud of our culture and most times feel like we are the only country in the West Indies. I dont know!!!!! could it be because we always set a certain trend, which is reflected in our food, music, environment and most of all our people. And guess what everybody tend to pick up this trend :jestera: verry easily. I REALY DONT KNOW. But I think we are the best.

Best is relative. Every island proclaims they are the best, and to some extent tries to perpetrate that wherever they go. Maybe that is where these so called rivalries spring from. West Indians in general are a proud set of people, so there is bound to be some animosity and competition among the different islands. I think each island brings something unique to the region, and our differences is what makes this region so magnificent and diverse as it is. I think every island pines for a level of respect and acknowledgement not only globally but within the region at least. The West Indies is not one or two islands, and I think if people within the region and globally can learn to appreciate that, these so called rivalries would diminish.

I couldn't have said it any better. I don't mind competition among the islands but this stupid thing were we seem not to like each other needs to stop. It is counter productive and serve no purpose.
Again I must say I see no evidence of the other islands not liking Jamaicans.

There is always some level of truth to the rumours AK, but the extent to which I feel persons perpetrate such rumours is far above the level to which this so called indifference actually exists. Some people (and I have witnessed it) actullay fuel the embers of such talk for their own gain, which is to bring about disunity among each other.

Maybe they don't really dislike us, but are simply peeved by the fact that we are so popular in comparison and maybe they don't think we use it effectively.... cuz we don't really.
We are really popular though...
Ask an American or foreigner period to name the first caribbean Island that comes to mind.... Jamaica
I mean you watch TV and people use our accent(or try to), they curse our expletetives, use our slang. Not neccesarily effective, but they try none the less.

Hope you know that Jamaica isn't everything. So be humble that you have a small island to be proud of and not make it sound like we taking over the world.

Jamaicans are head and shoulders above the rest of those 'other islands' and we know it. Man, stop beating around the bush and tell di truth, cha. We are number one in everyting from football, music, athletics(yes yes Asafa), crime...lol. C'mom guys must of us nah know the capital of these small islands, nah true...?...lol.
Yes i live UP to the stereotypical 'yardie' loud, brash, don't tek sh.it. Im JAMAICAN AND PROUD!!. I lived in Barbados for a short period. Yes its a beautiful country and all. However the place didn't have no SOUL...lol. Its liike they didn't have an identity, i pity dem. THe country more jamaican than some parts of Jamaica, and its the truth mi tell. Bahamas is the same likkle america/kingston..lol. I don't think smallies 'hate' us par se I just think them jealous and who can blame them. Yes JEALOUS, its envy cos their country is not in the global spotlight. Jamaican culture is worldwide*smile*.
When i was in BIM the Bajan men couldn't leave me alone all wanted 'some'. So say it loud say it proud JAMAICA LAND WE LOVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
PS Trini guys are cute still :D
For the longest this thread was going in a mature and sensible direction, but nothing last unfortunately. Now we wonder why none of the islands cant seem to get along  I dont think the Bajan men wanted some because you were Jamaican, in fact nationality doesnt matter from what I am told.

Dear Miss Ex,
:eusa_snoo Be serious for a while I do not hate Jamaicans, I do not hate anybody and if you could read english as well as you read french then you would have understood that it wasn't hatred but sadness I was expressing like in "sad really sad".
Anyway as you said everybody is free to think what they want, but discussion is always a good way to get to know each other...don't misunderstand others' viewpoints and they might want to understand yours.
;) And finally my writing in french was not supposed to mean hatred but rather strangely when my feelings are overpowering me, I tend to go back to my native languages i.e french or creole. I apologise if some of you thought that I was showing off. :icon_frow

Well out of all the caribbean islands ive heard that THE Bahamas is the most ugliest of them all. Is it true that you have no mountains just beaches?. I believe all the islands DO get along its just a bit of sibling banter. Again let me make this clear hate is a stong word. Its Jealously simple. One more thing what exactly is THE Bahamas famous for apart from the 'who let the dogs out' and Sidney Poiter(both of which are not native to THE Bahamas).
And believe it, in Bim us yard girls got a reputation. Men literally fall over themselves to get SOME. :rotflm:

I think 5 million tourist last year would disagree with you on that, but you yourself said that you have not visited any other Caribbean Island and dont intend to, so you opinion means nothing to me.
Is it true that you have no mountains just beaches? Wow you impress me with your physical geography, and indeed you are correct. We are made of limestone and all the islands are relatively flat, anything else you want to know?
I believe all the islands DO get along its just a bit of sibling banter.
So now we are all brothers and sisters, and we all of a sudden get along. Not according to your previous statements.
Again let me make this clear hate is a stong word. Its Jealously simple. One more thing what exactly is THE Bahamas famous for apart from the 'who let the dogs out' and Sidney Poiter(both of which are not native to THE Bahamas).
I have heard such sentiments over and over again, and I laugh harder each time. Insecurity is not what I am about. Only insecure persons feel the need to prove and compare such ridiculous things. It wouldnt matter one bit to me if someone never heard of my country, it provides the perfect opportunity for me to sit down and tell them about it.

QUESTION::Are Jamaican's liked by other West Indians? :eusa_thin
MISS EX says: yes and No. It depends what you mean by 'liked'. I mean most smallies like our music and culture because its truly superior to their native 'music'. However, if you mean whether they like the individaual thats a different story. Yes ja has A LOT of negative press. So instead of focusing on the positive many smallies focus on the negative. They cant stand to see a PROUD jamaican it makes them sick with jealousy and envy. Ok i lived in Barbados and had a fun time. I could live there, really. Jamaican culture was everywhere on the buses, on the streets in the stores i mean EVerywhere. Bajan men LOVE jamaican women. But are cautious when it comes to Jamaican men. I blame that on the 'rude bwoys dem'. So most Bajans are fearful of the Jamaican(especially male) individuals.

Ok....Miss-Ex....
You need to take a chill pill. There is nothing wrong with being a PROUD Jamaican...but you don't have to shove it down everyone else's throat. Barbados is a more economically stable country than ours. You hear them boasting about that? the Bahamas is very very very beautiful but rather expensive to live/visit. Trini's basically own Jamaica....you hear them boasting? Showing up your black, green and gold colours doesn't make you anymore Jamaican than any of us here. You speak so well of the goodness of country....have you been to our ghettoes? Try telling them about how lovely our country is. What about our spiraling debt and crime levels? I don't think that is anything to be proud of. Yes you love your country. We all do.....BM loves her homeland...she is displaying the same civic pride in her country (allbeit in amore tasteful manner ;)). We all have something to contribute to the region. We may be the best in the region in football but which country is in the final round to go Germany? What is wrong with not having mountains? Miami is flat.....and yet people still flock it. Just chill and be proud man but nuh badda show-off. (MC....your point has been proven QED)

:icon_arro Miss Ex you represent your country in the worst way possible. Your so called 'patriotism' lacks a huge element of class, maturity, and humbleness. Attacking other islands in your 'My beloved country speech' was in poor taste and absolutely uncalled for. Patriotism should never replace kindness, compassion, and respect for others. Being biggety, boastful, and rude, is nothing and never was anything to be proud of, and all it does is breed disunity.

Miss-Ex is showing why Jamaicans are not liked by other islands....so i guess that pretty much answers the questions. and it appears that her mind set is a bit narrow as she can't see past her nose and look into what she is typing and realizing the implications of her words on the wider Caribbean society.
