some of you may know me from the tech jamaica board, and you know im way into gadgets (robotic mowers etc).
so what i did was i brought my wireless linksys router with me from the usa and had the owner of the guesthouse i stay in attach it to his adsl modem and guess what??
HIS ENTIRE COMPOUND NOW HAS INTERNET ACCESS! its sooooooo cool!
so if any of you have a neighbor who has adsl, tell him/her if you will supply the $30 usd linksys wireless router (or get them to buy it lol), then you and probably some of your neighbors can get online! that is if your desktop or laptop has a wireless card in it, which really isnt hard to install!
gosh technology is soo cool!

i dont see why they would think such a thing. besides the owner even called and told them he was gonna do it! people all over the world do this, all it is really is an extension of the signal eh? in the usa many isps promote the idea of wireless internet
just last month in nashville tennessee, they made an entire community park a free wifi spot so who does it harm?

Well there was issue like that with the Cable TV service provider here before they introduced the set top box. One person would have cable tv installed in their premises and their neighbour simply buys coaxial cable, run it from their house to their neighbour's who has cable and get service :eusa_snoo
As for the wireless internet..not sure if providers would make an issue of using one to connect your neighbours. Well maybe not as long as you not reselling their service illegally ;)

So I spoke to an employee working for the ISP in Grenada and he said that such pratice is acceptable as long as the service is not being sold to third parties.

It would be no different from an individual getting broadband Internet access and setting up a wired network to make his 2 PCs in different rooms of his home have access to the Net.

I'm fascinated at how excited she is about discovering this.
Maybe it's because I'm a hardcore techie. :eusa_thin
How selfless of you! That is indeed admirable (that you'd give away internet access like that). I would have secured the wireless lan via MAC address. :D Too much freenis mentality in Jamdown as it is.
What? It's a security measure! :eusa_shif

actually it wasnt that selfless lol. i wanted to make sure i had net access while im on the island so what better way to do that than to bring a wireless router eh?
and yes you are a hard core techie, there is no way in the world i would go into the router settings and secure things like you would do! lol
