What genre of music do you guys listen to mostly and why?
In the caribbean here our major music types are Reggae and Dancehall, but aside form that do you feel that our musical culture is being eroded by other types of music liek hip-hop/rap and r&b. Which leads me to another topic about music and its physcological effects, how does music affect you?
Chris

Well as for me I listen a various types of music from Adult Contempary, Jazz/Blues, Country and Western, Reggae, Dancehall, HipHop/RnB, Souls, Rocksteady, Ska, Gospel, Opera, Rock n' Roll, Pop just to name a few.
I don't necessarily like Techno, Hardcore Rap, Grunge, Heavy Metal but I guess you have to listen to not like, so it's safe to say I have listened to these before and probably will listen again.
Well music it self has both a calming effect and it also acts as a hype too.

Today our music only says 2 things, "Bling, bling and more bling" "Girls, girls and nuff more girls", plus some other stuff not worth metioning.
If that's all we currently have to offer, then our music has become WEAK. Because it's so weak, it's easy for the Ying Yang Twins and the sort to come in and "create a hit". Hip-hop and Rap are not "eroding" our music, WE are begging them to come in because we're way too supperficial and misguided to produce anyting of substance.
I'll listen to Elephant man cuz the new dances are intriguign and I admire his creativety. I don't mind that kind of simplicity. But everything else is painful to listen to. I'll take 80s and early 90s dancehall anyday.
I'm one of those people that realise that other genres exist besides reggae, dancehall, hip-hop and r&b. I lcan't really say that there is a particular genre I listen to the most, but top of the list is alternative rock, electronica (NOT techno, eck!), drum and base, funk, 2 step garage music, new age (enigma, enya, deep forest) and latin (brazillian mainly, I luv drums).
I love music that does more than just make you want to dance or tell your woman/man how much you love them (there's more to this world than that you know...did'ya know!?).

NirVana well said. Our music today has no substance except for a few artists like say hmm.... Beres Hammond and I could name a few more. But 90% is based on superficial stuff like their ride and girls and whatever else they have.
What I've come to realise is that artists that have more substance in their music don't seem to be as successful as the ones with bling bling as you put it. Take a Beenie Man versus an Anthony B. Beenie Man is now a household name, if you mention Anthony B to some people their like "who is that?". In order to become successful you have to do what everyone is doing that appears to be the mentality of our performers nowadays.
Really it appears that we are among the few that really find dancehall appalling. It seems the mass like what the artists are putting on the table today so its not going to stop.
But then again if you look at the music from the 80's and 90's you could see a trend. Alot of the artists from those era's didn't sing anything with substance. Take a King Yellow man or a Red Dragon for example. It was mainly about women and to some extent guns in the late 80's to 90's.
It's just that then you had more artists doing concious lyrics then.

Mainly beats huh? Then that will explain why you like Linkin Park, cuz they've mixed hip-hop with rock, so you don't have too much guitar and drums, or too much "one beat" hip-hop and "scratching" (which I'm glad has been brought back). Linkin Park and Incubus have that hybrid sound I like. That's why I like the Neptunes. They create beats that pull on different parts of your senses.
What else you like?

To tell you the truth country music isn't all that bad, what we need to realize is that in all types of music you have different levels of it. Some country has pop influence like Shaniah Twain or Faith Hill but others are just straight country and they even have the deep southern, country accent.

I see we all (more or less) share the same taste in music.
My First love is Rock
My first rock love is Linkin' Park. Linkin' Park OWNz... and Dev, I know exactly what you mean when you say they take your mind off stuff. Otherz that round out the lot are Evanescence, Blink 182, Sum41, Disturbed, Hot Action Cop, Filter, Simple Plan, Smashmouth, Hoobastank, Andrew W.K. (Andrew W.K. RULEz!! http://gallery.cybertarp.com/albums/userpics/16619/bang.gif) and a number of others...
My second love is Trance
Actually, I can't decide between Eurodance and Rock music... There's something ethereal about trance music. It's a pure psychadelia of sound.... it's just so......pure..... It's the purest form of music that exists in my opinion. Most people can't tell the difference between Trance and Techno. But if you guys love beats that much, try finding and downloading music from the following artists: Paul Van Dyk (try his hit track: Nothing but you), Armin Van Buuren, Airbase & Paul Oakenfold
Thirdly is New Age (No affiliated in any way with the New Age movement)
I love new age for similar reasons as Trance. But with new age, it's all about the trichotomic rifts in minor and major chords, since new age rarely carries a distintive and repetitive beat. The foremost artists that come to mind are folks like Enya, Moby, Ronan Hardiman (Riverdance & Feet of Flames!), Rob Dougan (aka Rob D), Evangelis, Yanni (Yanni RULEz http://gallery.cybertarp.com/albums/userpics/16619/bang.gif), Adiemus and the many artists that populate the Pure Moods series of CDs. I love the soothing minor to major chord rise and falls of the new age musical phenomenon. Absolutely fantastic music!

Fourth...
My former favourite form of music: Acappella. Most specificially, the group that consisted of George Predergrass, Wayburn Dean, Gary Moyers and Duane Adams. The albums, We Have Seen His Glory, Rescue & Set Me Free will always be classics in my book. When Duane Adams was replaced by überbass Robert C. Guy, it totally warped the production values on Acappella Spirituals I & II and Hymns for All Ages. Damn that dude had a MEEEEAN bass! :o Keith Lancaster's other groups like AVB are also favourites. They had a way of synthesizing their voices to the point where the music no longer sounded like acappella. It was cool for a time. But then they overdid it...
I don't particularly like this new Acappella. They've changed personnel so frequently it's like everytime I go to their website, there's a new set of dudes in the driver's seat. But none of the new incarnations sounded ANYWHERE as good as the first Acappella. It's a good thing I was able to salvage their greatest hits in MP3. Cassettes don't last as long as CDs... :(
Lastly, I love, not like, LOVE, classical music, my favourite artist being Johann Sebastian Bach. I think that is largely because he primarily composes for violin, and I used to play violin - a LOT. So it was a match made in heaven. I especially love his spontaneous note sampling techniques in which he finds very splendid ways to take simple 8 note melodies and turn them into rousing and grandiose anthemic concertos, like Brandenburg Concerto No. 3 - WICKED piece of Violin music! Awesome stuff!! :D
In fact, 90% of the time you hear a classical violin piece being played in a movie, it is either a Brandenburg piece from Bach or Mozart's Minuet in D Major. Absolutely Classic stuff. :D
Y'all must be thinking of me really weird now...

I stopped out of bitterness. I wasn't being taught the violin because I wanted to. You know how some parents are? That's the thing about being born in the kinda family that I am, where everyone is either a musician, a professor, a scientist, a preacher or all of the above... they just expect so much from their kids (and put so much pressure on them to learn so many things). I really wanted to take my piano to grade 8 - but I was forced into the violin thing because they discovered I learned violin twice as fast.
I didn't mind, until I completely lost my piano skills. Violins are HAAAAARD to play. Don't be fooled by what you see on TV. Your fingers will BLEED, and you will loose whole finger nails before you can get to that level of professionalism. I'm not kidding. I think I started learning how to play when I was too old (about 14). So my fingers took quite a punishment to work in. To this day there's still a little crick in my ring finger. Everytime I think about it, I still feel bitter. No matter how skilled I got playing violin, I never really enjoyed it. My parents did. Which kinda makes me feel like their own personal entertainment, if you take my meaning.
But I've since forgiven them and moved on. But what it has left with me is an insatiable appetite for violin music. Ironic isn't it? I still love piano, but I wish I loved it more than violin. Somehow I think I've been brainwashed.
Y'know what's funny? All my folks listen to is chamber music. That's why I think I love classical music so much. That's also why I think I love trance and alternative. If you analyse the mechanics behind chamber music, you will discover that note progression on the scales is done in a very similar manner. For example:
Take any song by Linkin' Park and carefully note the musical progression. You will notice the following things:
Most of their songs are written in F or G major (just like chamber music)
Linkin' Park favours trichordal guitar rifts. Chamber music uses trichords in concertos written entirely for apeggio or stocatto.
The main chorus starts in the major chord, and lapses into a minor chord just before engaging the final note in the chorus with a progression BACK to the major chord. You will notice this same pattern in Beethoven's Ode to Joy (The part that goes: Hills & mountains, trees and forest blah blah blah.... that part of the chorus is in a minor chord).
Many of these songs have what are called Bridges. This is usually the last verse of the song, which progresses entirely in the minor note of the song (usually with a different number of beats per stanza), but advances to 1 octave higher when it comes back to the chorus for the final rendition. You will notice this same style is used by folks like Bach in the Brandenburg concertos or by Handel in his Young Messiah collection or even in his Hallelujah Chorus. Remember the part where they sing "king of kings - Hallelujah, Hallelujah - And lord of Lords - Hallelujah, Hallelujah - (jump 1 octave & repeat)" - Yeah, that's a bridge.
Linkin' Park and many other Alternative groups use the same kind of note progression as in Chamber music. So if you find that someone loves classical music, but also loves alternative, don't be surprised. Most of the time they're not even cognisant of why they love both seemingly diametrically opposed music forms.
The thing is, the human brain can subconsciously pick out patterns in music you are not consciously aware of. That's also why these same people will love Trance (techno to you folks who don't know) for the very same reasons. In fact, Trance is closer to chamber music than Alternative. But the mechanics are all the same.
Chris - Third Day is AWESOME stuff. I love their new single (I wanna sing a song for your Lord!). I love that tune. :icon_mrgr
Chris, do you know a group called the Parachute Band? They have a song that I love called "Complete". I LOVE that tune. Perhaps one of the best Praise & Worship songs I've ever heard.
Maranatha has some really wicked hits too. But I don't think anybody did it like Acappella. Acappella is in a class all by themself.

Being a Christian, I listen to a lot of Christian Gospel music. My favourite being Worship Songs. I love praise and worship. There's nothing compared to giving praise and glory to God.
But I enjoy listening to Papa San, Prodigal, Junior Tucker, Kirk Franklin, Ron Kenoly, DC Talk (favourite back in the day), Mary Mary...etc.
CD's like WOW 2001 and WOW 2002 you will find in my collection.
I used to listen to souls when I was years younger. Couldn't get enough of it. Especially during the time when i had girl trouble. I found it made me depressed to hear these other artists and thier woman problems too. And how it made them feel. Sad, lonely, hurt.
Now, my eyes are focused on things above. And from above, I will find joy and peace and comfort. No more depression for me. :)
Who likes feeling depressed anyway?
