Are you a blood donor?
It's a good idea to donate blood so that hospitals have adequate supply for treating patients in need of transfusions. During the holiday season in Jamaica, there tends to be a greater demand for blood. This year, the Blood Bank is appealing for blood donations as their supply is dangerously low.
Read about it here. (http://www.jamaicaobserver.com/news/html/20051223t220000-0500_95261_obs_nbts_urges_jamaicans_to_donate_bloo d.asp)

I'm thinking of going to give a pint or two next week. I seriously think everyone else should too. I'd hate to know I needed blood or one of my fellow yardies needed blood and because I was selfish, I/they died.

True thing Twinkie. I will muster up the nerve to donate too. I hate needles.
It's especially important for there to be enough supply of the rare blood types.
You never know who's life you save when you donate blood. It could be your own.

I should donate blood also. I have a very rare blood type and I wouldn't want to know that there's none of my type,if ever I should be in need of donated blood.

I agree we should all donate blood, after all you never know what might happen - our donation can simply save a life. You or someone close to you may need blood one day.

Since I have Diabetes, donating blood is not an option for me anymore. I did donate blood for my father when he was sick in the hospital many years ago.

Totally understandable Ramesh
We should all take the initiative and be selfless without the cause being directly infront of us. We shouldn't wait untill mommy and daddy needs blood to donate it.

No mayb's...take your blood sugar seriously. You can pick up a blood-glucose test kit from any pharmacy,if that's more convenient for you than going to the doctor.

I would donate, if they could find a small enough needle. My veins are so tiny that it is just so much trouble to find a suitable vein with the adequate amount of pressure.
An alternative would be to take blood from a major vein like the jugular (neck), or arterial blood which would both be more invasive and riskier. I would only be willing to do that for a very close family member.

I dont think so, because a portion of your red blood cells would be deformed. Consult a doctor.

Re :icon_ques : I have Sickle Cell Trait, Can I donate blood?
Answer: For nearly all purposes, blood with sickle trait is OK. Many of the blood units collected are
from donors with sickle trait. The Blood Bank only tests for sickle trait
upon requested by the doctors ordering the blood for transfusion.

Is it a fact that persons with tattoo(s) cannot give blood?

Is it a fact that persons with tattoo(s) cannot give blood?
Not at all...that is not factual. Persons with tattoo(s) can give / donate blood...the blood once donated,if infected with for eg.HIV, would be labelled as such, then not used.
Personally,I don't agree with this...sounds as though the health ministry is working from bottom up (no pun intended).
It would seem more logical / practical / ethical and moral to test the person's blood before accepting the donation. It is the backways method that resulted in the child being accidentally transfused with HIV positive blood...how did this happen? The wrong label was used...positive label was put on the HIV negative blood, and negative was put on the HIV positive blood....the blood that was used for the transfusion was of course the one labelled negative (the actual HIV positive blood).
So sad,but true...
In the hunt for blood donors, the morality and ethical standards are not always applied.

I think you would have to wait for a certain amount of time after getting the tattoo before you can give blood, like a year i think, im not sure.

No, I have a tattoo and I give blood regularly, but I think you have to wait about a year after getting the tattoo to donate.

I want to donate but seeing my blood leaving my body is unerving. Especially since that when I was younger and in the hospital, the drip started to back flow and suck out my blood. It was scary. Dunno why. I probably should do a blood test....just incase....

I take it that it's been quite awhile since you saw your blood leaving your body, correct?
It's all in the mind.If you really want to donate blood once your blood test is fine, look the other way bredrin! Remember, the life you save could very well be your own.:)
It's common practise for the blood to flow back into the drip, mainly due to positioning...happened to me before...what was horribly painful was when the nurse kept squeezing the drip to allow the blood to flow back into the vein (caused by too much blood being pumped into the tiny vein at once).

How the mighty have fallen :(
I hope he doesn't have any tattoos.
Have you donated any blood as yet?
Have we heard what is happening in South Africa? Gay MEN are considering a protest by donating blood in droves because the S.A. health ministry is refusing to accept blood from MEN who have sex with MEN.
I know S.A.'s position might be different from ours in Jamaica becasue of the problems they are having with AIDS, but should it really matter? Especially in Jamaica's case.

Yes it has been awhile. They were at UWI for 2 days last semester but they came during a time when there wa alot of work to be done and I was wary of giving blood when I had my assignment to turn it. I'll visit a blood bank in my spare time. Right now I'm on a cleansing system. Makes me tired though....

Sadly to say..I have never donated blood, It is something that I would really like to do but, I juss doan trust the Jamaican Health system....I hear too many horror stories.
Concerning the issue of Gays donating blood....It's a delicate situation....but as long as the blood isn't contaminated I don't see why it should be a problem...after all...is not Gays alone get STDs.

The J'can health system (re blood donations)is no different from anywhere else. Simple...here is what you can do to ensure your safety: Keep your eyes open and watch the nurse, etc carefully...if you aren't sure that the needle being used is a new one,ask that another one be used and also, that it be opened for you to see.Seriously,it's a concern expressed by many persons, and when they are aware of the role they can play,it increases their comfort level.
:icon_arro Izemi
Utter rubbish !!Of course it shouldn't matter.
From a logical and practical view point, what does sexual preference have to do with donating blood? The issue would ONLY be if the blood donated is infected with HIV.

I have given blood quite a few times, it doesnt hurt or anything.
My problem with giving blood is that you are basically out of commission for the
rest of the day, no driving, no work, no productivity. I can't afford to burn time
like that. time = money.

Not all the times.
I have seen people pass out after giving blood, their brain isnt getting enough
oxygen necessary for operation. Driving in that state isnt advisable.
