good question Dev. I mean having a university in the second city seems like an Ideal thing. Do the authorities that be think so? hmm...
The University of the West Indies has a school of continuing studies and I guess they have not seen it fit to open a campus down in Mobay, because of turnout perhaps hmm....?
Does it have to do with the fact that there will not be enough support? Can Jamaica hold another university hmmm.....? :?: :?:

So much for vision uh? I believe it would be a great idea to have a university in such a great city. Even though I am a Kingstonian, I've always loved Mobay.
I am not sure how financiallly practical that might be right now, but one of the ways is to have UWI establish extension centres that would cover some of the courses offered on the main campus. Right now NCU has established such centres in quite a few parishes in Jamaica which has resulted in more persons having access to higher education. If you are a working person and want to obtain a first degree you simply register for the modular courses offered through the extension program.
To up and build a university like that is highly impractical, but if you check the history behind most of the universities in jamaica, you will notice that most of them started from humble beginnings. They actually passed through certain phases, like from vocational to academies, to junior college, then to senior college then on to university status.
Probably some of the community colleges in Mobay can become upgraded to the point of first-degree-granting institutions, if the right kind of money and support is put in place.
So why don't you submit your ideas to the relevant authorities, like the Ministry of education, or the University Council of Jamaica?

hmm I have since noticed that city of guilds certificates and diplomas in Mechanical/Electrical Engineering are now being offered at The Information Technology Institute here in Montego Bay.
It has also come to my attention that another University is to be formed in Montego Bay. As far as what I heard it is now operating out of St. Paul's United on Market Street. Not sure of the details but next year is the expected date of University hood for them. Will keep you posted.
Montego Bay, Jamaica. Looking Out, Looking In, Going Teritiary.
