Wow!

Didn't think I'd see the day when Jamaica would have a female in charge.

Let's hope she does a good job while she's at the controls.

New to the Forum...Dont really see anything to be excited about. Portia has been in the PNP for such a long time and hasn't really done anything of significance. Yes she is a woman but that doesn't mean she is the best person for the job...Anways I will wait and see.

I have mixed feelings on her victory, I'm VERY happy that a woman, who have come from the grass roots have risen to this great level, which I suspect is making the arrogant, condescending and snobbish "bright" people vex.
I feel she would bring a renewed sense of hope and help unite the country, on other issues I hope she will be able to turn this country around, I'm operating on blind faith here because I don't know much about her policies since it was conspicuously absent from her campaign. In fact I can't remember hearing her or her team articulating any policy decision; nothing on education, crime, employment, absolutely nothing, this fact greatly concerns me.
On the other hand Portia has been a part of the PNP since the 1970s. She has been a Member of Parliament since 1976 and a Minister of Government since 1989. She has been an integral part (as a very senior member) of the most corrupt, incompetent and wasteful government ever in the history of this country. She hasn’t, with the exception of one PR stunt in Parliament, ever challenged her colleagues for their handling of the affairs of our country. For the most part she has simply watched as her country sinks into a pit of depravity. Now my question is what will she do to bring about the changes, given the desperate position the country is in, i.e. deep debt, failing businesses and rampant unemployment etc.. Hugs and kisses will not change that.
Anyway I wish her all the best.

I think that was a good decision for a well deserved leader!

I have to agree with the perspicacious sentiments of mead. We're not out yet.

Given her victory, I am now convinced that the JLP has as much chance of winning the next general elections as a popsicle has of survival on the surface of the sun. But I echo mead's sentiments. I was overjoyed to hear that she won. I actually feel like voting again (even though I know that is just my emotions talking). But if she messes this one up, it will probably be more traumatic than the worse foul ups of her male counterparts.

I am just as nervous as mead is, since while I'm glad for the fresh breath of air that Portia brings to the table, I am worried that not much about her policies are well known. I am a little anxious that she has spent so much time accentuating her "grass roots" origin and little else about how she is going to effectuate change. She will win the next general elections by pure virtue of being the first female party leader alone (as I'm sure the large majority of Jamaicans feel the same way). That both excites and worries me. Since while I'm excited to see a female put her male counterparts to shame (finally!) I am worried that she might mess up. I pray to God that she doesn't... :eusa_pray

So here's to hoping that she brings about the capricious change that we've all long hoped for. I hope that whatever upheavals she brings to the fore, will be swift, deadly, uncompromising, radical and most importantly; fortuituous. The Cabinet Office needs a shake up of Biblical proportions. I pray that she will be the "hand of God" moving through Government. But like mead, I feel that if she fails, her failure will be over-accentuated by her chauvenistic critics (both male and female). I hope she proves those bastards wrong...

...or else, all this celebration will be for naught, and all the folks who celebrated will feel incredibly foolish. :eusa_wall

But let's look forward to a changed Jamaica, shall we? ;)

I leave you with a question:

For those of you who previously felt disconcerted by your choices at the polls, do you feel now that a woman has taken the helm, that you now have an obvious choice? Has her victory given you reason to vote this time?

tiffany
February 26, 2006, 12:39 PM
If I were in the position where i could vote, i definately would exercise this right. Seeing that there came about such a change in the government, there is hope that change can come about in different apsects, and my vote would help make a difference.

From what the employees saying, bcuz she's a woman who won against the odds she has to work twice as hard. So i think she'll do OK. They/Ya'll force her to..

OK, baby... chillax....
1. i think ur off ur medication
2. Mrs. Simpson Miller has helped Jamaica on a whole (not jus ur old yaad) against violence and brutality, she stopped a hideous war between two skewls in which children were fearing for their lives just by making a speech.. not to mention fraud by the agricultural minister leading to a major arrest in 1989... u remember that ryt? or were u too young?
3. I have been to Spanish town, eltham to be exact bcuz i lived there for 4 years. And Spanish town road have ppl like u mashing it down suh it nah amount to much.
4. Wouldn't u have stopped to think that portia might have come to being leader of the PNP bcuz of SOME reason...
5. DON'T BE STUPID
6. (and most importantly) Portia do more for this country than u have suh u nuh have nuttin fi critique...
Kissez...
PLUS TING SHE WON WITHOUT UR VOTE!!!!!!!!:dwl: :dwl: :dwl: :dwl:

ps. Portia really try hard with the people down there.. but it makes NO sense to try help people who doe wah help themselves.. She went down there to speak to the people from Spanish town road (another of her famous speeches) and them seh PEACE.. next day them war... You cyaaan invest in people like that, the government doe have the money to waste on a poor investment...
and u kno the people down there still love her (they not going stop)... cuz they kno she trying HARD... but old habits die hard and that area falling... but NO ONE (except Justice of course  ) wah blame her....

And this "phenomenom" has been in the ruling part for how long..and the country is like this.....Somebody please put a disaster in the PNP...It might work out better than the phenomenom! I must be living in the wrong country....I am just hoping that she does well..so that Jamaicans dont use her failure (if she happens to be a poor leader) to judge women leaders on a whole...I am still puzzled why she refused to do any debates...or why she got defensive and angry when anyone talked about her policies...Kritikal...Portia is a politician I encourage you not to blindly support any political leaders...Real changes in Jamaica will come from us..not her
