Do you feel safe? Do you think about security? Would you be able to cope if you found yourself in a dangerous situation?

Do I feel safe?
Physically: It depends on where I am at. ALthough I know that God walks we me. The area I work in is like a 'bad area' at night, killing, looting and shooting. I have to do massive prayers coming home late at night.
In general: I feel safe as long as Jesus walks with me BCk. This world is full up of so many different events and people that are disasterous that I can only trust in God for safety.
WHat do I think about security?
Physically: Good to have
In general: Not always effective but is a necessary precaution.
Would you be able to cope if you found yourself in a dangerous situation?
I have been in so many dangerous situations and now I know that I can cope. I always told myself that since/if I survived this one here, I can survive anything that comes my way.
If you have BAD HEART, don't read!
When I was in the military and these crazy Instructors in training chose to stimulate our 'war' experience by having us walk 15 miles in the dark with over 40 pounds on our bodies, only to hear the area was corrupted with possible 'ambushers' with real weapons and grenades.
My M16 couldn't do much when you only have blanks working with here. After reaching the destination, only to be lost in the woods with a wet map in the dark and a group full of men trying to get out of this mess and also working together to fight, camouflage and hide from grenades and terrible gas that we may receive to cause injury and impair vision.
FInally getting out of that lost woods only to meet a high wall :eusa_wall that you have to learn how to 'scale' (thank God for Jamaica and fences with dogs). This was not the end of our misery knowing that we have to crawl on our faces and stomach and get our selves across a big football looking feild filled with, burnt tires, 'stimulated dead bodies', smell and sight of blood splashed everywhere (so it seemed). Smell of burnt vehicles, gun powder and gas. Colored smoke gas to impair vision, CS gas that causes muscles twitching, snooty noses, red running eyes, and stomach tightness disabling breathing. Then you crawling under barb wires only 1 foot high, back wards; crawling into mud and still doing a POW crawl and most of all, fearing your life and wishing you hadn't joined the army, because all this is scary crazy stuff. :icon_cry: Untop of all the commotion, they are firing with a tanker and a few machine guns at full speed LIVE rounds only 3-4 feet above your head as we were in formed.
If you dare walk and not crawl across this feild, or even lift up your head too high, then 'a dead yu dead'. :eusa_pray
Thank God for Jesus star or else it would not have been funny, pretty or nice, IF my mom had received a telegram of a dead soldier. Now this is one of my dangerous experiences...more than livin glife on the edge for a country and some college money.

But seriously i don't think about it too much. After all I went to Cornwall College.I endured enough wars and hold up at knife point and gun point not to be afraid of eny of the above.
Of course well least of all I was taking self defense classes.

Being a Jamaican I am security concious. I have been held up several times, and each time I did I fought back, stupid I know. However, when you are in the moment sometimes you just forget that it's best to just let them have whatever it is they are after, but usually my temper get the better of me. Lucky for me I have never gotten hurt. May be if they held me up with a gun instead of a knife it would be diff.
Living in Barbados and here in Canada where the crime is no where as bad as Jamaica I sometimes forget nut never for long.

Would you/have you taken a self-defence class or bought weapons to make you feel safe? Do you think it would work if you were attacked?

Yes I learnt this class in military, but no form of class or security can protect you or stop the attack. May help but it bound to happen.

What style of hand-to-hand combat did they teach in the military?

1. You ever seen a fowl-fight? Just like that. Woman and woman and rolling in the ground and mud, getting sweaty and ting. Choking, sitting on each other, grabbing the neck. Making legs weak behind the knee. Stopping breath. They basically taught us ways to kill with the hands. We had to use that too in the fight untill they say stop, she's dying.
2. We learnt to use the bayonet (big tick knief :0)...learning how to stab hard and good without the use of a gun and slash a yout quick to death.
This is all US Army btw.

I don't want to stray off topic, but yes I miss it sometimes. I miss days of not doing nothing but getting paid! (I learnt how to sham too)..And most of all, the genuine people you meet and their dedication to a thing. Lots of life lessons learnt.
Yes I would have been in Iraq on my unit rotation right now if it hadn't been for my injuries. But I did prepare them before they left by fixing the weapons.
Oh bother! (This is all for another thread).

How safe do you all think it is for women out there today? I've noticed that ladies can't walk 2 steps down the street without some guy calling to them. Some of the guys are quite unsavory.

Safe? I already answered this question in the first post of this thread. I will say however, that women will be bellowed at or hissed at from now until we shrivel up.
Yes some of the guys are unsavory and so are the women too. Can't keep their eyes to themselves.

The security industry is big business these days. Guard services, rapid response, alarm systems, roadside assistance, etc. are raking in plenty money in Ja today.
People seem to be more concerned about their security.

As for the effectiveness of those measures, I think it definitely makes some people feel safe. I know the car tracking services have yielded some well publicised results. But all this stuff is expensive. Only the rich can afford that.
Businesess will spend the money on the guards and stuff. It impacts greatly on their budgets.
Drew
September 19, 2004, 12:30 PM
it is very effective cocoa. a thief stole a car couple months ago with what one those high tech tracking devices, securty and police went to get back the car and they recovered 20 stolen vehicles. never put your eggs in one basket.
i know someone, a very rich biz man that has one of the personal bodyguards i think its guardsman elite or something like that. and because of my friends sidekick he has survived robberies and some other conflicts that he would need help to get out of.
they have been quite a few kidnappings of rich people earlier this year and these private security firms are really making some profits.
so yes its very effective, but like bck said only the rich can really afford it.

I don't know because I've never been attacked yet. I will say however, I am VERY aware of my surroundings... so I guess that's how I keep myself prepared.

September 19, 2004, 08:52 PM
Ok... you meant for me to answer my own questions :icon_mrgr
duh... :p
Ok:
Do I feel safe?
For the most part yes. For me, safety comes from avoiding high risk situations and places. That plus I pray daily for the Lord to keep me safe (that helps).
Do I think about security?
Yes I do. I try to be aware of my surroundings and to know what vulnerabilities I am prone, what threats are around and what I would could do to mitigate the risks (avoid the situation, escape, manage etc.).
Would I be able to cope if I found myself in a dangerous situation?
I sure hope so, but that's one of those things you don't really know until it happens. Which is why I tend to try and avoid dangerous situations so I don't have to find out. I've been in sticky situations (fights and bullies in school) but nothing life threatening. Sometimes I came out ok, sometimes I didn't. I guess it would depend on the nature of the situation.
Would I/have I taken self defence classes?
I used to formally study martial arts (not for very long though) and I watch plenty of kickers :icon_mrgr
Have I bought weapons?
Do kitchen knives count? When I was a kid I bought one of those "Rambo" survival knives. I also have a boken (wooden Samurai training sword) and one day I hope to get a real katana. I don't walk around with any of these though, they all stay at home.
Would self defence techniques or weapons work if I was attacked?
It depends on the situation. If someone really wants to harm me, I doubt there's a lot I could do to stop them. If the opportunity presented itself, I may be able to do something. But first thing on my mind would be getting away as quickly and as safely as possible.
How safe do I think it is for women today?
Not very. I'm concerned when I here my sister or wife tell me about the amount of men calling to them and following them whenever they walk alone on the road in broad daylight. I've seen the way men stalk women on the road. It's not safe at all. But then, it's not completely safe for men today either.

Have I bought weapons?Yes kitchen knieves count. LOL
I had a whole bunch of weapons once. That is my area of speciality in the army as an armor. From M16s, M9, MK19, M240, M203, arms, ammunition and explosives. I have knieves now and a mitlipurpose knief I walk with in my purse. Honestly, not to use it but just to be on guard cause as you say, crazy men hollering at your wife and sister (women), and they will attack if needs be.

Security Tip:
At home, keep your keys away from windows and out of sight. Thieves can use a stick or something like that to get at keys they see through the window, then open your doors and come in and rob you or worse. Same thing for any valuables (cell phones, handbag, wallet, money). Keep valuables away from windows.
