Corporal Punishment - spanking, caning, flogging
Capital Punishment - Execution

this has two sides to it.
yes it can help the indiscipline. but people with power always end up abusing the power. a teacher my hurt a child because of something that he/she did or even kill the child. then again, i ain't comfortable with another person harming my child. this is simply going to turn into child abuse.
i for one don't really believe in any form of physical harm. you are just teaching the children that you can't solve problem by talking. and that will just defeat the purpose.

I read somewhere about the methodology for training a child during different stages of it's growth.
In the earliest stages of the childs development where communication and reasoning isn't yet well developed, concepts have to demonstrated to children. The whole thing of reward and punishment plays a big role in conveying the concepts of good behaviour and bad behaviour. You reward the child for doing something good to associate positive feelings with doing good, and you punish the child when they do bad so they associate negative feelings with doing bad. Corporal punishment comes in here to establish the negative feelings when wrong is done.
At later stages of a childs development, simple reward and punishment become less effective. You have to start explaining things to them so they can reason and understand. Physical punishment at later stages may serve to provoke more feelings of anger and defiance rather than the intended corrective effect.
Alternatives to corporal punishment such as revocation of privillages (no TV, no Internet, no Video Games etc. for X period of time), may be more appropriate during later stages of development.
The concept of paying back ones debt to society through some form of community service (chores, etc.) may also be used in the later stages of development.
Corporal punishment has it's place, but it is not the answer to all discipline problems.
