Have you ever met someone from the forums? Have you ever spoken to them on the phone? Via MSN? Seen their photo? If so, have you noticed that you are consistently amazed that what you experienced doesn't match up with how you imagined they'd be?

Question: Why do you think this is?

Share your experiences. :icon_mrgr

Don't pay any attention to AB. Anyway, actually I spoke to AB on the phone a few times and online alot. Well, what can I say..... for one thing, his voice is deep to my astonishment cause he has this baby face, but everything else remaind the same i.e., he is still a goof ball and actually more fun to talk to.

Ok, I've spoken to Liquid Bunny - and she is far more hilarious than I had imagined. She had me rollin', laughing myself to tears - it's not usual that a female can do that to me. She's just incredibly fun. I know I am guaranteed a good time with the bunny. It's wabbit season all year round. The forums don't do her sense of humor any justice at all. Believe it. ;)

To answer your question: Well, I think it is because we don't know them personally and other members might percieve another member as weird, snotty, or stuck-up based on what that particular member might have posted or the persona they give off when they interact with other members online. Remember, it is a website and ppl tend to be someone they aren't until they get to know and become friends with someone or in this case another CY member... their true personality comes out....

It's a lot more complex than that Foxy, but that was a nice attempt. Pretty close actually :eusa_clap

Anyone else?

Hail

It is quite simple isn't it?

Consider the process of moving from PE (potential) to KE (kinetic).
More than what it actually is, it is how it is perceived.

It is quite possible and I do believe it is so, that the perception of how a person INTENDS to be perceived by others is more often not what or how they expect it to be.

Case in point:
I might think that I'm presenting myself to others as being intellectual and confident while the person perceives me as being obnoxious and self absorbed, narcissistic even.

It is easier said than done to have the difference between the two aligned and executed correctly or should I say perfectly?
Which of course depends on whether or not there is an intention to deceive or otherwise present yourself as something or someone you're not.

Regardless of who or what you are, the perception of yourself by someone else is heavily dependent on what they expect based on the image they have already created in their own minds.

So is it a question of who you are or what you are perceived to be?
Which one really matters ?
To yourself at least.

The truth is that it is natural for people to present themselves to others as they would like to be perceived; an extension of who they themselves would like to be.
This forum, in this virtual experience presents a great opportunity for one to do so; which is control of the alter egos, the various IDs which are present in our make up, or otherwise the pursuit of doing so.

You will find Jian Xeno, as I'm sure you are already aware of ; it isn't a matter of the execution but the discipline of the execution which gives us control of self. Which is the real catalyst.

This is refered to as connecting the outer-being with the inner-self or otherwise it is the person who knows who they are which is able to be who they are, whatever the circumstances.

Yes.. I may be rambling but what do you expect?
I've been to Calabash, call me for this moment inspired ;)

This is so true. I have spoken with AB as well and I was very suprised that he has such a beautiful masculine voice. Sure don't match his baby face. Now kiddo, don't let it go to your head :)

Xeno on the other hand looks masculine but sounds like a kid:icon_mrgr

Hey, that's a pretty accurate descriptive. But I'm looking for a specific sequence of words. Has anyone ever heard of a concept called Residual Self Image?

:icon_arro All

Psychologists assert that when we use anonymous electronic communication mediums, only less than 1/8 of our personality is displayed online, since other elements such as body language, tone of voice and eye contact are lost with the communication. Since only that tiny fraction of our person is what others experience, the human brain tends to perform a "lowest common factor" operation based on that perceived character profile, and build the rest of that person's image along with the profile.

Lowest Common Factor

Everyday we meet and interact with all different types of people. In each person we interact with, there is a summation of their character that we automatically perform in our subconscious mind. This summation is what is known as a Personality Temperament. Because we interact with people everyday, even when we only experience a small fraction of that person's temperament, we can automatically assume what the rest of their personality is like. This small fraction is what is known as the lowest common factor. However, this LCF also takes into account such elements as pertains to body language. But since body language is missing from anonymous communication mediums like this one, this leads to an interesting phenomenon known as Residual Self Image.

Residual Self Image

When we go online and we communicate with someone, only the most conscious part of our personality is displayed - which is how we think of ourselves. This part of our psyche is projected a direct result of our brain's processing of other people's communication, stripped of all the other non verbal communication forms that other people also exude along with their communicae. This essentially equates to lightning without thunder. Have you ever seen a large bolt of lightning in the sky, and anticipated a very LOUD rumble of thunder to follow, but only hear a slight distant tumble? This is what happens to our perceptions of each other when we interact online, and meet in person later. Our respective Residual Self Image projections online cloak the other aspects of our personality.

The part of us that is displayed online is the very CORE essence of our personality, but not an accurate representation of it. Since there is no body language to temper these electronically coded outputs, the communication information displayed online looses all of its context and becomes a summation of the best and worst possible characteristics of our person, which 99% of the time, is highly inaccurate and is thus, very easy to misinterpret.

Even the avatars that we select, (or how often we change them) alludes to our deepest, most unprocessed, subconscious identity. It is this subconscious identity that psychologists refer to as your Residual Self Image. It is how your subconscious mind sees yourself stripped of your ego or any higher brain functions. Other people will see this small fraction of your personality (too small to make an accurate temperament profile) and 80% of the time, will incorrectly sort your personality.

Work it out for yourself king, I would disagree with your analogy; it would suggest that there is somewhat of a let-down or otherwise disappointment in the expectations garnered from one's created RSI of the other person.
I'm seeing a residual profile of a control element which has lost an important receptor in it's collection mechanism.

Then again its all based on your point on view and what you need from any kind of exchange with another human being.

It is this exchange which is important; because if you consider it carefully it boils down to an aspect of control.

Please stay with I on this.

Psychology is a discipline which when studied carefully has two schools of benefits; control of self and control of environment.

The more we study the mind, our instincts and impulses, the more we learn about ourselves. We are then better able to manipulate, adjust and improve ourselves, giving us control.
This know-legde allows us to overstand our peers, it gives us control of the exchange between ourselves and said peers.

Are you following this young Xeno SkyWalker??

What is the most important thing to you during this exchange?
Is it control of the exchange?
Is it the predictable environment which is sought after?
Or is it the quality of information gathered during the exchange.

You see I once sought such control, I paid every attention to the details which I could use to analyze a person's profile so that I could overstand exactly who I was dealing with and there would be no surprises.
Such information and control is important of course, but it doesn't apply in every circumstance.

I found that this detracts from the exchange, as it centred around a manipulative aspect which prevents myself from learning much more than I could have.

What I've learned disagrees with the value of the tangible aspects of human to human communication that yourself and suggested psychologist have placed on them.
Whereas you might not have the usual indicators such as body language and tone of voice etc. there is more value to be placed on the intuitive nature of our perception; by reading writing styles, use of language and articulation and implied intent through use of language, there is enough information for us to use to discern the other person's profile.

More importantly (speaking for I-self) in this medium what is more important to I than anything else is what I am able to learn from someone rather who that person is.

So that I won't carry this thread away from what it might have been intended for, let I just say that there are only two persons (to the best of my know-ledge) in this forum that I do know.

Both of whom I have known before they have joined CY.

It has been interesting reading their post as I've have seens aspects of their personalities, expected and unexpected which I believe has added to our relationships and in some cases given I insight as to who they are, how they think and how they see themselves.

I've never really been interested in going out of the way to meet anyone on CY, but I have imagined what it could be like to be in a controlled environment with several of di I dem, discusssing specific topics.

Trust mi.. wha di I dem haffi seh an how unno been saying it, is already a Blessing and I give thanks fi dat.
