When going into a room that has fire on the inside, NEVER open the door. The fire has already burned out the oxygen in there. Opening the door will cause a sudden explosion when the fire receives a new supply of oxygen. This is known as a backdraft.

I learned that our Student Admin system was actually bought from UWI. That's why we all needed new IDs. I also found out that the bastards were using an archaic and out of date database system that did not incorporate relational integrity. So the two database backends were incompatible with each other. Now they have to re-enter roughly 10,000 records... from scratch.
I'm thinking that someone in the IT department needs to be taken out to the square and shot at point blank range.
Greatis
September 28, 2004, 11:29 AM
hmmmm now why would they do that aren't there cheaper options and if they have to enter over all those records why not just migrate it to a linux database system? :eusa_thin

September 28, 2004, 02:41 PM
Ja, I coulda told you that.
I learned today that ADO.NET doesn't make any distinctions between reserved words in SQL and user defined field names, even if you clearly denote the field with a SQL string delimiter (i.e. '[ ]' <- the square brackets). ADO.NET will automatically remove the square brackets and parse the field name (which also happens to be a reserved word) as a field name. But SQL Server will reject the query anyway, since the field name is really a reserved SQL command.
This is a clear and blatant bug in the Visual Studio .NET application. I'm writing my hate-mail to microsoft RIGHT NOW.
Those bastards caused me to loose 3 weeks of productivity (ok, two weeks if you count out Ivan) because the STUPID COMPILER didn't warn the User that the field name is a reserved word. Even SQL Server automatically encloses the name in square brackets.
-[Edit]-
I also found out that the auto-reference matching engine for objects and source code (which is really a form of AI) makes a lot of mistakes. I don't like the idea of AI changing my code automatically to reflect what it thinks is right. Just compile, tell me where the errors at, and let ME fix it. AI isn't good for a damn thing. I'm subtly reminded of I, Robot.
Man what a scary thought... :(

I learned today that no matter how hard I try, I just can't seem to hate someone who has wronged me enough to avoid them completely.
I guess it's a fruit of the Spirit.
I also learned that hatred, even if justified, can destroy you physically, and that's why forgiveness is necessary. I also fully understood why Jesus wanted us to love our enemies. For if we continue to hate them, we might die before they do (negative emotions release deadly anti-oxidants into your blood stream!) No point in that now is there?

Long but good!!!!
I got this from a friend and it is a lot to learn in one day but learn somethings from it.
I've learned that you cannot make someone love you. All you can do is be someone who can be loved.
The rest is up to them.
I've learned that no matter how much I care, some people just don't care back.
I've learned that it takes years to build up trust, and only seconds to destroy it.
I've learned that it's not what you have in your life,
but who you have in your life that counts.
I've learned that you can get by on charm for about 15 minutes. After that, you'd better know
something.
I've learned that you shouldn't compare yourself to the best others can do, but to the
best you can do.
I've learned that it's not what happens to people that's important. It's what they do about it.
I've learned that no matter how thin you slice it, there are always two sides.
I've learned that it's taking me a long time to become the person I want to be.
I've learned that it's a lot easier to react than it is to think.
I've learned that you should always leave loved ones with loving words. It may be the last time you see
them.
I've learned that you can keep going long after you think you can't.
I've learned that we are responsible for what we do, no matter how we feel.
I've learned that either you control your attitude or it controls you.
I've learned that heroes are the people who do what has to be done when it needs to be done,
regardless of the consequences.
I've learned that learning to forgive takes practice.
I've learned that there are people who love you dearly, but just don't know how to show it.
I've learned that money is a lousy way of keeping score.
I've learned that my best friend and I can do anything or nothing and have the best time.
I've learned that sometimes the people you expect to kick you when you're down will be the ones to
help you get back up.
I've learned that I'm getting more and more like my grandma, and I'm kinda happy about it.
I've learned that sometimes when I'm angry I have the right to be angry, but that doesn't give me the
right to be cruel.
I've learned that true friendship continues to grow, even over the longest distance. Same goes for true
love.
I've learned that just because someone doesn't love you the way you want them to doesn't mean they
don't love you with all they have.
I've learned that maturity has more to do with what types of experiences you've had and what you've
learned from them and less to do with how many birthdays you've celebrated.
I've learned that you should never tell a child her dreams are unlikely or outlandish. Few things are
more humiliating, and what a tragedy it would be if she believed it.
I've learned that your family won't always be there for you. It may seem funny, but people you aren't
related to can take care of you and love you and teach you to trust people again. Families aren't
biological.
I've learned that no matter how good a friend someone is, they're going to hurt you every once in a
while and you must forgive them for that.
I've learned that it isn't always enough to be forgiven by others. Sometimes you have to learn to
forgive yourself.
I've learned that no matter how bad your heart is broken the world doesn't stop for your grief.
I've learned that our background and circumstances may have influenced who we are, but we are
responsible for who we become.
I've learned that sometimes when my friends fight, I'm forced to choose sides even when I don't want
to.
I've learned that just because two people argue, it doesn't mean they don't love each other. And just
because they don't argue, it doesn't mean they do.
I've learned that sometimes you have to put the individual ahead of their actions.
I've learned that we don't have to change friends if we understand that friends change.
I've learned that if you don't want to forget something, stick it in your underwear drawer.
I've learned that you shouldn't be so eager to find out a secret. It could change your life forever.
I've learned that the clothes I like best are the ones with the most holes in them.
I've learned that two people can look at the exact same thing and see something totally different.
I've learned that no matter how you try to protect your children, they will eventually get hurt and you
will hurt in the process.
I've learned that there are many ways of falling and staying in love.
I've learned that no matter the consequences, those who are honest with themselves, get farther in life.
I've learned that many things can be powered by the mind, the trick is self-control.
I've learned that no matter how many friends you have, if you are their pillar, you will feel lonely and
lost at the times you need them most.
I've learned that your life can be changed in a matter of hours by people who don't even know you.
I've learned that even when you think you have no more to give, when a friend cries out to you, you will
find the strength to help.
I've learned that writing, as well as talking, can ease emotional pains.
I've learned that the paradigm we live in is not all that is offered to us.
I've learned that credentials on the wall do not make you a decent human being.
I've learned that the people you care most about in life are taken from you too soon.
I've learned that although the word "love" can have
many different meaning, it loses value when overly used.
I've learned that it's hard to determine where to draw the line between being nice and not hurting
people's feelings and standing up for what you believe.
NOW HAVEN'T I LEARNED ALOT!!!
BMGrip
October 15, 2004, 05:24 PM
I learnt today that you cannot bring no form of religious materials at your desk or even have a cross as screen saver, nothing at the desk.
I also learnt that my Supervisor is a liar and that some of my co-workers are hyprocrites.
I think religion belongs in church and not in the work place. Its hard for people to understand that. And I think women have a big problem understanding this and take this way to personal. If you want to pray and have icon do it in your home. Its a work place and thats why your there. Its not about freedom of speech, its about company policy that you clearly agree to when you take the postion.
So I think if you dont want to infringe on other peoples beliefs its the fair thing. If people dont display their religion its because they respect others and not because they are not religious. Im a christian, however I dont talk religion on my job. Only if someone ask a question about something that pertains and may help in the job. Such as a religious help organization, Only then will I give this information. But it is not the policy of the job to promote my religious beliefs on company premises.
If your religion is affecting you on your job. You may need to look at the reasons why and look at finding a alternative solution. Sometimes we have to gain more skills to gain better positions.

Thing is I'm serious! The other day, this girl waltzes up to me and starts yapping:
Her: Y'know, I think [other female] is a b!tch.
Moi: Y'know, you really should try to see the good in others.
Her: Yeah I know? Like, she's not really a b!tch? But she like, acts like it?
Moi: Never judge a book by it's cover.
Her: Yeah, but, like she said [some incoherent bad thing] about me
Moi: Haven't you ever said anything bad about her?
Her: Yeah, but then she like, deserved it, right?
Moi: But wouldn't that make you a b!tch too?
Her: Well...not really, cuz she's not really a B!TCH b!tch right?
Moi: But you just said she was a b!tch
Her: Yeah I know but she's not really a b!tch like that right?
Moi: But how can she be a b!tch and not a b!tch at the same time?
Her: Well...right! She's a really nice girl who sometimes says bad things
Moi: Exactly... (Waves Jedi hand) ...Just like you.
Her: Yeah, Just like... me... err... (has blonde moment)

Her: (flexes blonde locks)....really? ok! (ditzy giggle)
Moi: So go kiss and make up with your friend.
Her: Ok! (trots off skipping like a schoolgirl)
Moi: (muttering under breath)...stupid b!tch
So if I didn't know that women call each other b!tches and maintain a double standard (considering they're accusing the other of the same thing they're guilty of) this conversation would have been a mind opener. But it's not. Because I know everything they're going to say before she even thinks to walk over to me and bore me with her mindless dribble. I wish people were more complicated. Actually I don't. It's kinda cool seeing how stupid people really are.
Ok, I feel better now. Continue thread.

I learnt today that your family can be your worst enemy and that your friends treat you better than family.
Yeah: Blood runs thicker than water - It translates both ways:
Blood - Forms a more permanent bond, but is a very viscous liquid. It's not very flexible when oxygenated. Meaning, family members can be most unforgiving, although in good situations, the bond is much more detailed, richer and binding in nature.
Water - Requires more effort to form a bond, as it is the purest form of liquid. It's not very flexible when solid, but flows more easily than blood. Meaning, friendships are difficult to make, but once made, the bond can be hard to sever. Furthermore, true friends can be far more forgiving, if not more transparent and shallow than familial relationships.
This is the original context from which the expression was coined by a buddhist priest. However, today, people only predominantly remember 1 of the meanings. I bet y'all learned something new today.

Postulate 1: Knowledge is Power.
Postulate 2: Time is Money.
As every engineer knows:
WORK
———— = POWER
TIME
Since Knowledge = Power,
and Time = Money, we have...
WORK
———— = KNOWLEDGE
MONEY
Solving for Money, we get...
WORK
———— = MONEY
KNOWLEDGE
Thus, as Knowledge approaches zero,
Money approaches infinity...
regardless of the amount of Work done.
Conclusion: The Less you Know...
the More you Make.

That the saying "You learn something new everyday" is not true. There will come a point in your life where the frequency of learning something new drops to a dull crawl. At this stage in your life, (for most people, it's when they're really old), nothing surprises you any more. You'll have more days when you don't learn something new.

Interesting!
The next time you are washing your hands and complain because the water
temperature isn't just how you like it, think about how things used to
be.
Here are some facts about the 1500s:
These are interesting...
*
Most people got married in June because they took their yearly bath
in May, and still smelled pretty good by June. However, they were
starting
to smell, so brides carried a bouquet of flowers to hide the body odor.
Hence the custom today of carrying a bouquet when getting married.
*
Baths consisted of a big tub filled with hot water. The man of the
house had the privilege of the nice clean water, then all the other
sons and
men, then the women and finally the children Last of all the babies. By
then
the water was so dirty you could actually lose someone in it. Hence the
saying, "Don't throw the baby out with the bath water."
*
Houses had thatched roofs-thick straw-piled high, with no wood
underneath. It was the only place for animals to get warm, so all the
cats
and other small animals (mice, bugs) lived in the roof. When it rained
it
became slippery and sometimes the animals would slip and off the roof.
Hence
the saying "It's raining cats and dogs."
*
There was nothing to stop things from falling into the house. This
posed a real problem in the bedroom where bugs and other droppings
could
mess up your nice clean bed. Hence, a bed with big posts and a sheet
hung
over the top afforded some protection. That's how canopy beds came into
existence.
*
The floor was dirt. Only the wealthy had something other than dirt.
Hence the saying "dirt poor." The wealthy had slate floors that would
get
slippery in the winter when wet, so they spread thresh (straw) on floor
to
help keep their footing. As the winter wore on, they added more thresh
until
when you opened the door it would all start slipping outside. A piece
of
wood was placed in the entranceway. Hence the saying a "thresh hold."
(Getting quite an education, aren't you?)
*
In those old days, they cooked in the kitchen with a big kettle
that
always hung over the fire. Every day they lit the fire and added things
to
the pot. They ate mostly vegetables and did not get much meat. They
would
eat the stew for dinner, leaving leftovers in the pot to get cold
overnight
and then start over the next day Sometimes stew had food in it that had
been
there for quite a while. Hence the rhyme, "Peas porridge hot, peas
porridge
cold, peas porridge in the pot nine days old."
*
Sometimes they could obtain pork, which made them feel quite
special. When visitors came over, they would hang up their bacon to
show
off. It was a sign of wealth that a man could "bring home the bacon."
They
would cut off a little to share with guests and would all sit around
and
"chew the fat."
*
Those with money had plates made of pewter. Food with high acid
content caused some of the lead to leach onto the food, causing lead
poisoning death. This happened most often with tomatoes, so for the
next 400
years or so, tomatoes were considered poisonous.
*
Bread was divided according to status. Workers got the burnt bottom
of the loaf, the family got the middle, and guests got the top, or
"upper
crust."
*
Lead cups were used to drink ale or whisky The combination would
sometimes knock the imbibers out for a couple of days. Someone walking
along
the road would take them for dead and prepare them for burial. They
were
laid out on the kitchen table for a couple of days and the family would
gather around and eat and drink and wait and see if they would wake up.
Hence the custom of holding a "wake."
*
England is old and small and the local folks started running out of
places to bury people. So they would dig up coffins and would take the
bones
to a "bone-house" and reuse the grave. When reopening these coffins, 1
out
of 25 coffins were found to have scratch marks on the inside and they
realized they had been burying people alive. So they would tie a string
on
the wrist of the corpse, lead it through the coffin and up through the
ground and tie it to a bell. Someone would have to sit out in the
graveyard
all night (the "graveyard shift") to listen for the bell; thus, someone
could be "saved by the bell" or was considered a "dead ringer."
And that's the truth... Now, whoever said that History was boring ! ! !

Juntendou University, Tokyo. Professor Yosinori Kuwabara walks through his main laboratory, surveying his subjects. They are living goat fetuses, attached to mechanical umbilici that pump blood, deliver nutrition to cells, and dispose of waste. The goats float in body temperature amniotic fluid in clear plastic bubbles… fully functional, artificial wombs.
How long before we have an artificial womb that can carry a human fetus to full term? Without hesitation, professor Kuwabara answers: "Six years." Add another decade or so before the use of fake wombs becomes ubiquitous, and yer old pal Jerky's thinking to himself that the ******-shredding horror of live, "normal" birth will join non-anesthetized amputations and Roller Derby in history's "I can't believe we used to do that!" file.

1 Corinthians 3:16 NIV
16 Don't you know that you yourselves are God's temple and that God's Spirit lives in you?
or what it's purpose is...
2 Timothy 4:2 (King James Version)
2 Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all long suffering and doctrine.
or how important worshipping with others of like mind is...
Hebrews 10:23-25 (King James Version)
23Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised
24And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works:
25Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.

How? I often come across that same problem the few times I make webpages.
Easy. In your favourite image editor (be it Fireworks, ImageReady or Photoshop), do the following:
Create a slice with no rollover behaviour. You can use a rectangular object to determine the borders of the slice. Simply draw a filled rectangle on your page where you want to insert the dynamic object and add a slice to that rectangle.
Save your page and export it to the HTM and GIF components. Ensure that you place your images in a subfolder.
Pull up the HTM page in DreamWeaver.
Select the slice that you created earlier with the filled rectangle and delete it.
The space that remains is a Table Cell (i.e. <td>... </td>). You can drop any dynamic object you want in here.
The trick behind this is that Fireworks, ImageReady and PhotoShop all export sliced webpages with <TABLE> </TABLE> tags. The tags are merely place holders for the GIF or JPG slices which are assembled like a Jigsaw puzzle when you run the webpage.
When you create a slice, you don't have to attach any kind of behaviour to it. Since the slice is exported as a GIF or JPG image that sits in a table cell, you can simply delete it in Dreamweaver, leaving an empty table cell. Then you can insert any dynamic server side object you choose.
The beauty about this is that you no longer need <DIV> tags, which allign objects they contain to approximate pixel positions on the screen, irrespective of the screen resolution. This way, you can center the master <TABLE> tag and everything inside it, including the dynamic object you inserted into the now empty table cell, will be centered as well.
Awesome isn't it? :icon_mrgr
I have a weird feeling posting this on CaribYard... It just feels... wrong... somehow...

Dateline: California. Kyung-Tai Min, lead researcher for the National Institutes of Health and California Institute of Technology has made a startling discovery.
While investigating the effects of 4-phenylbutyrate on fruit flies with neurodegenerative disease, Min accidentally found that administering the drug to healthy flies extended their maximum lifespan by more than 50%, and increased their average lifespan by over a third.
An even more incredible aspect of the drug, which is already being used in the treatment of cystic fibrosis and sickle cell anemia in humans, is that it causes absolutely no negative side effects. The flies don't just live longer, tacking on another half-life of misery at the end of a normal life; they actually live better. The drug works by literally slowing down the ageing process, increasing energy, sexual stamina, and number of offspring produced by the fly.
Being no dummy, Min and his team have secured fast-track funding from an as yet unnamed benefactor - although sources point to either Pfizer, Eli Lilly, or a desperate Goldie Hawn - and they are currently readying tests to be conducted on higher orders of animal, going from rats to pigs to dogs to monkeys to humans.
Dateline: Reykjavik, Iceland. Following the trail blazed by a Harvard study that found longevity was definitely an inherited genetic trait, Kari Stefansson, chief executive of DeCode Genetics, claims his biotechnologists have succeeded in isolating the so-called Methuselah gene, a single stretch of DNA which allows some people to live past a hundred without lapsing into cancerous dementia or total decrepitude.
To fully comprehend the magnitude of this discovery, one must first understand that, up until a week ago, it was believed that thousands of genes working in tandem determined longevity in humans. We now know that this part of life is actually regulated by a single, solitary gene.
Professor Thomas Perls, a Harvard geriatrician involved with a previous study of the phenomenon, has said: "An average set of genes will allow you to live to your mid to late eighties. To get another 20 healthy years, you have these disease-resistant genes."
"We know the location of this gene," Stefansson explained to local media. "Soon we will study its exact DNA sequence and work out how it works in the body. You can then think of making drugs that could replicate its action."

I finally learned why the GameCube sux0rz:
Proprietory GD-ROM technology is a 3½" mini-disc DvD with 1.36 GB of data.
Mini-disc port is too small to fit any normal sized 5¼" DVD.
The data stored on the disc is in blocks - so every game is in factors of 1.36 GB...
The system doesn't support any other media format.
Nintendo of Japan were not thinking of multimedia integration
All of this was as a result of tunnel vision.
Tunnel vision is a bítch. When you're in a market as harsh as this one, stupid decisions like these can make or break a company like a rotting twig. Nintendo is officially out of the game - literally. Their new Revolution system's major selling point is its backward compatibility to systems as far back as the original 8-bit Nintendo of 1985.
I wish them luck with that.

I just learned (and I mean, JUST) that in order to refresh the contents of an ASP.NET page which changes based on the value of a Session("Value") variable, you have to force the page to do a complete re-load - and it can't be done from code within the page, or else it will redraw the same page, unchanged, from the browser cache....
ANNOYING!
I had to build a secondary page with nothing on it and put code on it to automatically redirect to the calling page in order to force a complete page redraw. Man, that is so flipping lame...
