View Full Version : Smart Women...

Barbara Walters of 20/20 (USA) did a story on gender roles in Kabul several years before the Afghan conflict. She noted that women customarily walked about 5 paces behind their husbands. She returned to Kabul recently and observed that women still walk behind their husbands, but now seem to walk even further back and are happy with the old custom. Ms. Walters approached one of the Afghani women and asked, "Why do you now seem happy with the old custom that you used to try and change?" "Land mines," said the woman. I wish to prove tha fallacy of the statement "behind every sucessful man is a good woman"?

Greatis prepares for the onslaught :icon_twis

It's true though, what's wrong with saying it? If it isn't their wife, it their mother or it could even be their own daughter that movtivates their drive to succeed. All successful people have support systems, so what's wrong with acknowlaging that?

lol... but let the onslaught begin lol :icon_lol:

Yes... I have a lot of strong male figures in my life mainly my grandfather. So yes it would be fair to say! Support and success go hand in hand! No one can do everything alone.

Greatis
September 26, 2004, 04:12 PM
ok so why is it constantly said that behind every successful male is a woman. why is so much hmmm attention placed on that. It's like a man cannot do without a woman (which is true) but alas it works both ways.

AngelsKiss
September 26, 2004, 04:18 PM
The reason for it is that in most instances women are nuturers. They are the driving force behind their kids and love ones. Not to say the same can't be said for men.

That's true Angel and I agree however this statement implies that men are nothing without women but hmmm in truth and in fact it works both ways as I said before. I believe this proverb should be dumped or a similar one made for the women. :eusa_thin

It works both ways however in society men are looked upon as being more "productive" or "important", for lack of better terms. I think that the saying "Behind a great man is a great woman..." came about from women feeling left out of the equation. Typically men, through out history, men were the ones getting the recognition for their careers, their achievements and such. If it weren't for the mothers that raised them, the wives that were raising their families, they may not have been able to achive the same level of success.

So I believe that's where it came from.

Greatis, it's not as simplistic as whose fault it is that women in years gone by appeared to have been left behind. However to cut this short, we don't need to throw out the saying simply because it doesn't mean that men have no value. Contrary to the point, they do have value, however, with out a good mother (yes and a good father), who provides most of the nurtering then it makes life that much more difficult.

The bible also extolls the virtues of women. Read Proverbs 31.

Of course we are speaking about a "good woman."

There it goes again notice where the father endz up in brackets that goes to show how appreciated we men are. :eusa_thin.

It's funny you know women feeling left out. I don't think for once it's the mens fault. Women of that era were willing to let the men take charge and it came back to bite them in the butt. It wasn't the men who fought for the supreme being identity it was the females that handed it to them on a platter over a period of time.

Drew
September 27, 2004, 09:11 AM
lol, he's right ladies.

AngelsKiss
September 27, 2004, 09:59 AM
lol, he's right ladies.

He is not right. Come on, this is coming back from the biblical days. Women never handed over the reigns to men on any platter or however you want to put it. Even the bible deems that men are the head of the household. It was just the way society was, women stay home to raise the kids and men out to work. A lot of that changed over the years. Women have always played a supporting role to men, hence the saying.

Once upon a time women were not allow to vote (this was a law), they were not allowed to hold certain jobs, men got better paid, etc.

BTW Greatis me placing the father in a bracket has nothing to do with the fact that they are not seen as important.

Also, if you look at today's society, the majority of single parents are females, not the males. Women will more likely stick around than their male counterparts. Just look at Jamaica for example how many kids there are without fathers.

On topic again:

G!I don't know that what you're saying is true. I think that Angelskiss has a good point. The reins weren't handed over at all. When were we in "control", in society, to being with, that we were able to hand that over on a platter? It was decided that we were inferior as a sex from day one. What we fought for was the opportunity to prove that we too are capable of great things.

Drew
September 27, 2004, 12:10 PM
well i think he's right in the sense that the world is acting like it doesn't need men anymore. look how many mothers choose to be single parents. what they do is get a man to get them pregnant and cut them loose.

but you're also right angel, back in the day women weren't seen to be anything important due to biblical teachings. villages use to have parties when baby boys were born, when a girl was born no one knew.

AngelsKiss

I don't think it's because they don't need men any more why most women choose to be single parents. Many choose to do so simply because they have not found their ideal mate and their biological clock is running out. Others end up being single parent simply because the men walked out.

Very few women I think would choose to be a single parent if they had the option of a good husband.

LOL...am gonna be bad here, but if you check out even this website, who run things? The men of course. Not 1 female Moderator and then you all turn around and complaint. Same thing in Government. We women have to keep fighting to get some say:)

It was decided that we were inferior as a sex from day one.

Who decided females were inferior to males? So many people take what was written in the Bible to mean that women are inferior. That's not the case. God may have designated a special role for women, but by no means are they, or should they be treated, as inferior.

If (for argument's sake) it is a womans designated role to take care of the household, what is inferior about that? It's a challenging job, of significant importance to society as a whole. I once wrote an essay (either for A Level GP or while on campus) about the impact that women's move away from the role of homemaker had upon the upbringing of children, the stability of the family, and the effect on society in general. One of the observations I have made is that with more women taking up careers, and spending less time in the home as homemakers, children are not getting as much of the nurturing and guidance as they used to.

There are more "latch key kids" spending time with helpers and babysitters, or coming home to an empty house without supervision. They're getting into more trouble at an earlier age, and the result in the long run is that there are more messed up adults plaguing society.

Bear in mind, men have a responsibility too, but if the man's role is to go and work to provide, the thing that kept the balance was the presence of the mother as homemaker. Take that away, and the balance is lost.

How can anyone see that as being an inferior role. It's so important. More women need to realize this and not feel as if it is some inferior thing they need to run away from. More men need to realize it's importance and stop belittling women who are making the effort.

I'll buy that men and women may have been given different roles in the past, but that just makes them different, not superior/inferior. Times have changed and people need to work together to keep the balance in the family and not get caught up in trying to prove who's better.

AngelsKiss
September 27, 2004, 01:21 PM
While I don't support that women are inferior, I think what BG is saying that it has always been a male dominated world. We may not be inferior, but we have been treated that way in the past. In an earlier post I made reference to the fact that women were never allowed to vote by law or even own land in some countries.

How many families can afford to have only 1 parent working? Now a days most women have to work to earn a living, hence the reason for latch key kids.

I don't think we can blame women for going out to earn a living. As for the men, too many of them walk away from their responsibilities as fathers leaving the women to do all the work of raising the child.

True, times have changed, and in many families, both parent's have to work to make ends meet. This is why I said that they need to work together to ensure that the home gets taken care of as well as the bills. If both parents are committed to this, and neither of them see it as "inferior" work, they can work something out and keep things balanced.
