US firm targets UWI students. Recruits all final-year math, actuarial science students

Recruiters from a United States-based actuarial consultancy firm are aggressively recruiting the entire pool of final-year mathematics and actuarial science students from the University of the West Indies' Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, but professionals in the field here say there is no significant loss to the local industry.
In the last two years, representatives from the Minneapolis-based firm, Watson Wyatt, recruited and procured working visas for 47 final-year students - placing them on contracts lasting up to three years - to fill a growing demand for persons in those professions in several states.

Good to see that Math still has a place. Unfortunately it's not in the nation of their birth :?

I saw this in the paper today....this is Good and Bad news. Good: Jobs for the graduates (wid nuff money), Bad: Local Talents are leaving.
I will say again as always, Jamaica's number one resource is its people and no one seems to be paying attention to that. Sadly it is a resource that can be wasted and lost.

the brain drain syndrome thats what's killing Jamaica. It hurts to see so many of our fellow citizens seeking work elsewhere. Why can't we provide in Jamaica, jobs for people like this?
Anyways hats off to these final year students. Those who have student loans will be able to pay it off and all. Afta all nuh job nuh de ya fi dem get anyway.

Let hope they do pay off their student loans. Too many people conveniently forget that they owe money to the Student Loan Body.

Regarding students paying off their student loans ... that's why I've always advocated the bonding of students on student loans. The conditions however would have to be different in that the rates would have to be very low, almost zero. If a student decides to migrate then they simply pay off the bond/loan and they're free to go. This model works in Singapore (if I'm not mistaken) and it works very well.

That news item, further states:
The UWI's placement and career services, which collaborated with Watson Wyatt on the recruitment drive this year, said it did so after receiving permission from the labour ministry.
"I wrote to the ministry of labour and the ministry did say, verbally, that it would be okay," said head of placement and career services, Merrit Henry.
So, since the government isn't doing well at enticing investors to provide jobs, they've decided to aid the brain drain scenario with a nod of appreciation.

You have to remember that the Govt. has indicated its intention to give some attention to the next big industry ... remittances ;)

People need to stop being hypocrites :icon_excl
In today's global economy, companies cannot expect young qualified people to sit and wait for scraps of employment to fall their way. If you want to attract good talent, make it worth their while. If you want the nation's bright minds to stay in the island, give them opportunities to shine. Encourage them. This does not mean there must be handouts, but do something to entice people to stay here man :icon_excl

BCK jobs would be nice. :(
But Chris you're idea of bondage can only work if their is gainful employment available here in Jamaica. If it's not then hey they gonna go. :eusa_thin
