A few days ago on my regular walks a pack of dogs (perhaps 6-10) from a house up the street attacked me. Usually when I pass the house they yap and bark but that day they were more ferocious than ever.

Needless to say, one of them bit the back of my foot. I had to get a Tetanus shot and Augmentin for a week. Augmentin, as you probably know, does not really react too well with the stomach so I have running stomach at times.

What have your experiences been with violent animals?

6 - 10 dogs is a formidable pack. :) I was bitten by a dog when I was a child. Actually, I was trying to pat the dog on the head. It was chained, but my neighbours(who were also kids at the time) assured me their dog would not bite. The dog had other plans though. lol The dog gave me a good bite on my hand. I was really hesitant before stretching my hands all the way, so the dog must have felt really uncomfortable with me stretching and pulling back my hand repeatedly. :D

With a pack like that Ramesh a weapon may have been necessary, a weapon such as a hefty stick. Usually I find that if the dogs find that you are in a retreating or fearful mood they usually advance. If you are assertive and face them they will sometimes get more flustered but usually they are more ready to retreat than attack when they are facing their foe head on especially if they are venturing outside their gate(territory).

One always has to keep their eyes on them though, if they attack all you can do is fight back and put them in their place. Can't afford to turn ones back to a group of flustered dogs.

Never been bitten by a dog before, but came close a few times, the most frightening experience was a few years ago when I happen to walk pass a yard with the gate left opened, when about 8 or so mongrel dogs launched a coordinated attack on me, they quickly surround me like a pack of wolves, barking, growling and taking turn biting at me from behind, I remember spinning in circles, swinging kick after kick for about 15 to 20 seconds, before the owner ran out of the house to call off the dogs.

Trust mi, upon till that day I didn't know that mongrels where that smart, anyway When I reached home my mood changed from fear, to anger then finally shame, shame because after 15-20 seconds swinging kicks not one of the kick landed, I wanted so much for my size 12 steel toe boot fi connect inna one a dem head *sigh*. From that day, whenever I have to walk pass that yard I make sure to gather some big stones.

@ ramesh did the owner(s) of the dogs paid for your medical expenses, or at least agreed to do so in the future?

I have never been bitten, but I have been chased a few times when I was younger. Whenever I am confroned by a viscious dog, I pick up the biggest rock I can find, and stand my ground. No sense in running.

I was bitten when i was about 8yrs by a dog. Darn dog held on to my foot even after hitting him as hard as I could. I finally got him to let go by giving him a taste of his own medicine' on one of his front fee. I was mocked to death for a while, but they eventually got over it. (was embarrasing as hell!!!)

Another time, a big mix bread (German sheapard looking) dog gave me the scare of my life. I always had to pass his gate to go to my cousin's house. I walked with my stick so he wouldn't dear challenge me. He was always silent, always watching, but never in a hurry. One day, as I walked boastily past the gate, there he was, silently watching me again. I intentionally waved the stick in my hand so he could see (hoping to intimidate him a bit). A few seconds after passing the gate, I tripped over the stick flat on my stomach. By the time i rolled over, this big K-9 was standing over me with an unpredictable demeanor. I then tried to get up (WHO THE HECK TOLD ME TO DO THAT???) and the darn dog grabbed my throat (but not too hard) and started growling like crazy. Man ah bawl till a weaeaeaeaeaeakkkkkkk!!!! If a neva fi a car deh drive pass mi nuh know what di ol dog wudda do me. Now that was another very embarrasing experience with a dog. :icon_neut

:eusa_whis lol.

Animal can sense fear so what I do is get real angry and stare them directly in the Eye if he growls I walk directly to him very aggressively let them know I mean business.

One minor problem though if you walking with somebody who is a coward and they begin to run I think you should do the same too because its almost like they feed off the coward's fear. So much that your aggression towards them they dont even fear u one bit :icon_eek:

If the dog is like a rotwilder or a german shepherd, standing them down and staring really won't work. These dogs are pre-designed to take down big prey (from their wolf ancestry) so unless their owner is near... you pretty much salt.

If you are not near somewhere safe, never run from a dog. The chase excites them. Most times they're not aggressive. They just want something to chase and you fuel that need by running. Finding something to hit them with or just kicking them sternly in the jaw can help.

I've been attacked by dogs.... big dogs... but I don't run.... eventhough I'm about to mess myself up... I stand there...look at him...walk away slowly when them advances and usually the owner comes and calls them in.

Note to self - While passing gate of mixed breed German Shepherd do not trip over stick(weapon) and fall flat on face. :icon_mrgr

I bet Ramesh does not feel so bad or embarrassed now. Thankfully we all didn't suffer any major deformities from the attacks.

Being assertive with dogs will not always work especially if it is a pack of big confident dogs which are territorial or easily excited. Some people are capable of using attitude and personality to emit total dominance over dogs and other animals in any circumstance but we are not all gifted this way.

One thing is certain when dealing with any animal though; never take your eyes of it, running is never usually the best option especially if that flight is based solely upon panic. This applies to everything.

I have an interesting story:

Got home on night and before I got to turn on the lights, was was attacked by an (at the time) unknown creature. The thing jumped on my leg... I shook it off... he jumped on my leg again... I shook it off... The third time, I realized that di damn ting jus BRITE!!!... So ofcourse i had to do the next best thing... I slapped the thing with my hand, and just to be sure.. I rolled my hand downwards and kinda rolled the creature in between my hand and my leg. When the ordeal was over, I went and turned on the light... and to my disgust, surprise, fear and wetuppantsness, it was a frikkin croaking lizard. The thing jus pink and icky, and twist up twist up on the ground... DEAD!!... OFCOURSE i cried... EWWWWWWW :(

I tell you, they're out to get me!

Does croaking lizard qualify as violent animal? :)

Hmmm, doesn't sound pleasant at all. :eusa_sick

Is it me alone or does a female describing in detail how she rolled her hands down her leg (minus the lizard) sound intriguing? :icon_mrgr :eusa_shif

Does croaking lizard qualify as violent animal?

Not usually, but the thing attacked me, so that made him matriculate automatically into that category.

Yes....just that I carry a weapon aka the big rock stone or a stick but sorry to hear ramesh.I don't like this method. I am a pacifist by nature and will only launch "air rocks" at cattle and dogs if absolutely necessary.

ramesh did the owner(s) of the dogs paid for your medical expenses, or at least agreed to do so in the future? The tetanus shot and antibiotics were covered by Health Insurance, and she seemed genuinely sorry, so there was no need.

Yes ... killed one... waiting to kill the rest.I drove over one too a few years ago. It was not premeditated. :eusa_shif

Which is why I chose to ignore them. My reasoning is: I pass them often, so at some point they must consider me not worth the effort or perhaps tolerated.

I learnt to do this from "The Jungle Book". Mowgli called it "The Evil Eye". Apparently only humans are capable of doing this. Other creatures are unable to stare back for more than a few seconds. :)

These pups were mainly a bunch of "yappies" and I couldn't identify the leader.
