CY Movie Linkup

Smiles and I were discussing possibilities for another CY link up and she came up with what I think is a BRILLIANT idea:

Why don't we do a movie link-up for CY members?

The idea is fairly simple: We'd pool our funds together and rent out one of the auditoriums @ Carib for an upcoming movie. Early contenders are Fantastic Four 2 and Transformers. Other suggestions are welcome, depending on the availability of funds. It'd JUST be for people on CY. So the auditorium will only be filled with people who know each other at least via the forums here.

We need two things:

People who are willing to participate - The more the merrier! Bring your wives, girlfriends, husbands, boyfriends, kids (if any) frenz, etc. etc.


Bring your Dough! - The more contributors we have, the lighter the collective financing load!

It'd be just like a CY link-up; but we'd have the benefit of doing a movie at the same time. Can you imagine how much fun that'd be? Every night after a film, we could meet back here and labrish about the event.

So, are you interested? I need to know whether this venture is viable or not. Smiles and I are waiting for your responses.

I was in Liguanea earlier around 7 and she called and she was like "you're in Kingston on the road at night" lol. The news abroad makes things look ten times worse so she freaks out. . .so can you imagine if I tell her I am near downtown at night? How bout we all just show up early and "lock of a row" or section... or even box seats.... more viable eh? Same director.... - Actually, ID4 was directed by Roland Emmerich, a famous German director, who also did Stargate (1994), Godzilla (1998) and Day After Tomorrow (2004). Transformers was directed by Michael Bay, who before now has only been a producer on most movies he's been involved with. Stephen Spielburg wanted to direct this movie himself, but was already enveloped with another project. He didn't want to wait until 2009 to begin production on Transformers, so he got Michael Bay, who directed other films such as Armageddon (1998), Bad Boyz II (2003) and The Island (2005), to helm this project. Stephen Spielburg is chief executive producer on Transformers. So expect seriously BIG budget action & special effects. This is going to be the giant killer robot production to end all giant killer robot anything. Japan, eat your heart out...

ID4 was huge... so expect Aliens from other galaxies to come and watch Transformers too. That's how big it's going to be. - Dude this movie is going to dwarf everything that's coming out this year. I haven't been this hyped about a movie since Matrix/Lord of the Rings in 2003. Heck, I'm already on the waiting list for the DVD. Gotta have a DVD to demo my Logitech Z-5500 at the next CES.

X-3 was done by Brett Ratner, who also did the Rush Hour movies with Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker (he's also directed the third installment, due out later this year) as well as the Silence of the Lambs sequel, Red Dragon (2002), starring Anthony Hopkins, Edward Norton & Ralph Fiennes.

I'd have gladly rented the auditorium provided that people would be forthcoming about the support. But it's probably impractical considering the intended profit margins that Carib will want to achieve with these films and the fact that I may be left holding the bill. When it comes to Giant Killer Robots, sound is just as important as the CGI. Forgive me - but I will be more than willing to shell out EXTRA CASH for this movie. If I wanted to see it at Sovereign, I would just bootleg it. The experience is exactly the same.

In fact, now that I have a THX™ certified Dolby DTS Surround Sound home theatre system (plus access to a HD projector), the odds are that if I were to acquire a DVD rendition of this film, it would sound 10x better than anything that Sovereign can dish out - at the same volume. My box is kicking 505 watts of raw power. I still haven't heard it at full volume - as I fear recreating the 1907 Kingston earthquake. Can you imagine what that sounds like in a medium sized bedroom with my sorround-sound sattellite speakers mounted in the roof, with my massive 75 lb subwoofer creating earth tremors in the far corner?

- :dwl: You're mean. :icon_mrgr But Gillion is right. I can't stand to watch Giant Killer Robots in a cinema designed for kiddie-flicks and drama movies. Heavy hitting movies open @ Carib. In fact, sometimes they bypass Sovereign altogether (or show it only for 3 days). People just KNOW they have to see a heavy hitter in an auditorium designed specifically for refracting the sound in symmetrical arcs, around the space. The auditorium @ Sovereign keeps most of the sound towards the front. So if you're not sitting in the first 10 rows, you will miss out BIG time.

In fact, before Island Cinema closed, it featured the BEST sound of all three locations; BAR NONE. It's tilted architecture meant that sound would refract viscerally, up and down from the roof to the ground and create natural surround sound without any serious tech gimmickery. Jesus wept when they closed that auditorium. :icon_cry:

You know what? I'll sacrifice Fantastic Four 2 @ Sovereign to see if it's worth harming my GKR fix in early July. Failing which, I may have to break posse and go see it with Master BCK @ Carib. I go to the movies for escapism. Any movie that hones too close to reality is not worth spending money on. There are some exceptions though - like Star Wars Episode 2 and Pirates 3...

Just heard from a breddrin that works at Hollywood Tickets, he got to see the pre-screening of the movie a few days ago.
Interesting though, he says Transforming is getting just as must hits as Spiderman 3 which was getting a maximum of 2000 hits per minute.

Breddrin said it was "MAD!!!" 2½ hours of wicked FXs as he describes it.

I trust this breddrin's judgement.

EVENT POSTPONED

The CY Movie Linkup event has been postponed. The core reason stems from the fact that Transformers will not open this week as scheduled due to a late shipment from the Latin American distributor for Palace Cineplex. Evan Almighty was opened in its stead. It is likely that Transformers will not open until sometime next week or thereafter. We shall re-plan the event once we know that the film has opened. We apologize for any broken hearts that may have been caused by this most unfortunate delay.

Three of the Carib rooms was showing Tranformers from the 5pm and 8 pm hours all SOLD OUT!!! :icon_eek:

Besides... I saw it already. Ladies... you won't be disappointed. Alot of ladies enjoyed it. I was surrounded by women and they were having a blast. People clapped at intermission. Guess it brought out the kid in a lot of people.
