How do you feel about people who are overweight? Do you think they suffer from a disorder such as, bulimia some form of anxiety that causes obesity or do you think they have low self-esteem and they can help being the way they are?

I dont think everyone suffer from a disorder i can speak for myself i am in the 180 range i am at the GYm four times a week it use to be more but i have other things to do so i have to change my schedule. I have no low self esteem but i can tell you one need curve your stomach because the temptation is great with the kind of food that one sees every day. I will be on my diet and doing well have to change and buy smaller clothes and the moment there is a birthday cake serving instead of sticking to my diet i am in the midst of eating the peoples cake and sometimes this is every month for me and i think is just being damn greedy.

This is a good thread because I think eating disorders are over looked because peoople don't realize there are many different types! Also because weight issues are also over looked especially in North America. We've got obese women calling themselves a healthy size or voluptuious.... it's concerning to me because they over look the seriousness of the healt issues at hand!!!

Firstly..... If you have bulimia that means you BINGE and PURGE...stuff yourself with food then barff it up.... so I don't see how this person would be overweight! Symptoms of bulimia range from constant coldness, to yellowish green complexions, to fine hair growing all over the body, coarse wire like hair, tooth decay, there's a range of things we can list here.

Next.. Simply being over weight isn't that big of a concern. Overweight is just like 10-20 lbs over the recommended weight as per health ministry. Most people that are overweight are that, simply because of lack of activity!

Obesity is a completely different thing than being over weight and yes these people suffer from depression and a series of other things that contribute to their weight problem. These people do suffer from an eating disorder.... OVER EATING! Obesity is a huge problem because it goes from simple stuff like restricting their ability to conduct a "normal", "active" life.... all the way to erroding cartilage in their joints, causing "sudden" heart attacks, thyroid isues.... The list goes on but obesity is very concerning especially since it seems to be children that are increaingly becoming victims of this massive issue.. especially in North America!

I feel that people are people. Everybody has their own challenges, and many have health related challenges. I think people can be very cruel in how they treat overweight people. In response to that kind of treatment many have developed an "ultra-appreciation" of their obesity just so they keep their self-esteem intact.

There's nothing wrong with loving yourself and accepting yourself. We all should be thankful for what God has given us. We also need to be aware of potentially dangerous situations that can threaten our health, and take steps to remain healthy. Big people can be very healthy. You don't have to be slim to be healthy. The important thing is to eat balanced meals, excercise regularly and get adequate sleep.

Some people have conditions that pre-dispose them to being overweight (thyroid conditions etc.). With these people, they need to ensure they get good medical attention.

Popular culture today makes it very challenging to do anything in moderation. We have fast food (get it fast, eat it fast), we have a "feel good" mentality so even if the food is full of carcinogens and harmful addtives or fats, as long as it tastes good, then we're gonna eat it.

BCK I agree totally that you don't have to be slim or skinny to be healthy however... I hate to see obese people down play the severity of the effects that obesity can have on their body. I really do, my own Auntie is like that.. I don't hassle her like the rest of my framily. I know she hate excercise because it's boring and lonely to her.... so I have gone with her!

SPeaking as a person who isn't skinny.... skinny isn't the goal but I wish to see a healthier goal for my Auntie than 4'11" and 380LBS... that's not good for her, especially since all her life she never wieghed more than 12LBS... it's only recently that she gained all that weight! I would never make her feel bad about herself but whe she wants to go to the gym or for a walk, and needs company, I'm there... whtever it takes because honestly... she isn't happy like that.

Bashment thats good you are willing to be there for her to help. Maybe with your help she will get the motivation that she needs. Sometimes there is an imbalance that enables people to help themselves and they need to have medication for the depression. I think in other cases though it is simple neglect and they dont care about themselves in regard to appearance. No one is saying that all people should be skinny, but at least be a healthy weight that you are not grossly obese. When you tend to have a large stomach or mid section the risk for heart failure is increased. These are things to be concerned about if you dont want to have an heart attack. Also people who are overweight are at risk for other diseases associated with being overweight, such as type II diabetes. Eating healthy s essential to having better health and living a life not burden by a traumatic stress of the body, which would be living with some type of disease. In America this is a big problem obesity and alot of the people are young, who are carrying
around extra pounds. I think if people didnt watch so much television and consume so much fatty foods. They would be alot healthier, but that is not the case. Exercise and diet are key in maintaining a good balance for your weight and staying away from alot of starches. Such as breads, rice and food with fat and sugars. You can limit intake of these food with smaller portions and you will feel alot better in the long run. Eat right and stay healthy. ;)

I feel no way about people who are overweight...they are the most jolliest people i've ever met..and i don;t think that they suffer from any kind of disorder...maybe some do, but i don't think about that..and all my friends that are over weight have very hight self esteem! and carry themselves well, might i add!..

But what do you call overweight...cause to tell you the truth. i weight 140 lbs.. at 5ft 3..and there is a little weight chart that they have that tells you if you're overweight or not....and to my surprise the stupid thing said that I"M overweight...chrrps...

So is it overwieght by other people standards, or by your personal standard.

Another example here of why people are overweight. Because they take it as a joke to play with their health. :( That's sad Trubble you should see a doctor about that.
