Ok so I have made a few online friends on CY that I also correspond with via other communication channels. So how many ppl have you met thru CY and become friends with? What communication channels do you use?

People pool at online forums like this one for one reason:

So even if they flip out, they can go register somewhere else since nobody knows who they really are, where they live, and what they really represent. It's just an avatar, a handle and a residual self-image representation. It's like a role-playing reality game where you assume an icon to represent yourself. That's not really you, that's just who you want people to think you are.

Hey Xeno two things to note:

1) In RW (real world) there are ppl we think we know and we really don't.

2) Sometimes ppl online are more real than in the RW, because they figure what the heck, this person does not know what I look like and I will probably never meet them.

But the bond is never quite the same. I've never met someone online in person and met the same person I met online - particularly in forums. What I HAVE found out however, is that the person they put forward online is the most perfect version of their personality - good or bad.

The reason is that unlike in an IM, forum posters re-read what they type before they post it (most times) So the image portrayed is not that of a flawed person necessarily. Reactions are not usually impromptu, and more thought out than an actual conversation. That's why when forum participants meet in person, the reaction is ALWAYS the same:

"You're not quite what I expected"

Because now in person you are meeting the flawed personality in all its glory, not the image of perfection that you meet online. The perfection is not put forward deliberately. It's just a natural human reaction to this medium.

One guy on TechJamaica who met me in person sometime ago, oddly enough, thought I was white. Yep. You better believe it. His reasoning? Because he's never seen a black man write or articulate like I do (I guess because black people like to portray themselves in an ignorant manner in much of Jamaica? - I dunno).

Forums only expose one side of one's personality because the reactions you get online are to particular impressions of an abstract thought, devoid of personality descriptors like eye contact, body language and tone of voice which tell you SO much about a person that an abstract forum like this cannot.

Even when you meet someone in person and they put their representatives forward (as most women do) there's so much more about them that you can tell (With experience) what is fake and what is not. So you know who's fronting and who's being real. U zimi?

I can be "friends" with someone online up to a point. However, all that can change at the speed of thought when you meet them in person. The two worlds are RADICALLY different. Believe me. Human perception is a b!tch.
