Born and raised in the Southside community of Rae town, Kingston Jamaica, Carlton Grant p.k.a Spragga Benz has attained and maintained a level of musical notoriety only dreamed of by other aspiring Jamaican Deejays (The reggae equivalent of a rapper).

Spragga Benz's musical journey to dancehall stardom began with his first touch of a microphone in 1992, on a dare issued by Buju Banton, while doing dubplates for the La Benz Sound System of his mega-hits "Browning" and "Sound Fi Dead". Nagging the Banton for four songs instead of two for his favorite sound system, the Banton bellowed "If the I want four tune...yu haffi do the other two yu self." "Ah nuh nutten" Spragga jokingly replied..."Run di rhythm". "Mi sing some foolishness off the top of mi head but by the fourth line dem start buss pure blank and mek noise." This lead to Spragga recording two dub plates the following week, "Love Mi Gun" and "Jack It Up".

So immense was the public response when the dubs were played that soon Spragga became the most sought after artist by sound systems & producers in Jamaica and abroad. He went on to record such hits as "Could Ah Deal", "Jack It Up", "Girls Hooray", "Hand Inna Di Air", "Who Next", "Rude Bwoy Living", and a string of dancehall classics that were included in his debut album entitled "Jack It Up" released on VP Records.

With his career taking off at the rate of a dragster, the Benz made his first stage appearance at "Reggae Sunsplash '93", and followed up with blistering performances at both "Champions In Action" and "Reggae Ram Jam". He then ended his first year of stage appearances with a most memorable performance at "Sting '93" bringing the estimated 35,000 patrons at Jam World to lyrical ecstasy.

Spragga made even greater strides by signing to Capitol Records in 1994. In 1995 his sophomore album "Uncommonly Smooth" was released featuring more chart topping singles like "A-1 Lover" a duet with Chevelle Franklyn, "Body Good", a remake of "Spanish Harlem" featuring R&B legend Ben E. King, "Good Day", and many more.

Between 1996 and 1999 Spragga virtually dominated the dancehall arena with a barrage of hits including "Machine Gun Kelly", "Funny Guy Thing", "Car Crash", "Dolly House", "No Way" and "Born Good Looking" and numerous other anthems. Also to his credits are contributions to movie soundtracks for "Race The Sun" starring Halle Berry, and a collaboration with R&B trio Brownstone on the soundtrack for "Free Willy 2". Spragga has also collaborated with artists such as KRS-One, Wyclef Jean, Charles & Eddie, and Nadine Sutherland. He has even recorded a killer twelve cut CD entitled Two Badd DJ's alongside Beenie Man, which was also released on VP Records. During this period Spragga also extensively toured the Caribbean, North America, Europe, and Asia.

Still ascending to even greater heights, Spragga Benz dropped the lethal "Fully Loaded" (VP Records) album in 2000. The vicious track listing included "She Nuh Ready Yet(Hype Up)", "Wi Nuh Like", "Some Bwoy", "Weh Ya Say Star", "Push It Up", "Sleep With Angels", "Mur-Da-Rah", and more. The album showcased a cornucopia of Danchall's finest producers including Andre "Rookie" Tyrell, John John, Dave Kelly, Danny Browne, Donovan Germaine, Richard "Richie D" Martin, Richard Browne, and Bobby Digital. In addition to his own Benzspeculous production team; added to the talented mix were International House producer Todd Terry, master hip-hop producer/remixer Salaam Remi, and drafted guest artists Foxy Brown on "Too Stoosh", Lady Saw on "Backshot", and Red Square Records' Sugar Slick on "Badman Anthem". The accompanying video for the single "Wey Ya Say Star" featured hip-hop cameos by Pras of "The Fugees", Foxy Brown, and Noreaga of CNN. Also included were Lady Saw, Rayvon, Shinehead, Junior Demus, Frisco Kid, Notch (Former Born Jamerican), and a list of others.

Moving to more mainstream avenues in entertainment, Spragga hits the big screen, making his acting debut appearing as himself in the Off Line Entertainment film "Brooklyn Babylon", starring Tariq "Black Thought" Trotter (The Roots), and Bonz Malone. He followed up his debut by stepping it up to playing a lead role in Access Pictures' "Shottas". Which also stars Kymani Marley, Paul Campbell (Dancehall Queen), and Wyclef Jean (Artist/Producer). When asked about acting Spragga states, "It's a great experience which I hope to repeat over and over again".

Stepping back into the music arena in 2001, Spragga appeared and performed on the Foxy Brown single "Oh Yeah" and video. The single is off her "Broken Silence" album released by Def Jam. He also mobilized his Red Square Crew armed with new talents such as Sugar Slick, Assassin, Briggy Benz (his nephew), Natty Chris, Bad Greg Hines, and Limozine. Recording the dancehall anthem and video for "Gi Wi Dem". As well as teaming up with fellow DJ Elephant Man on recording the monster hit "Warriors Cause" on the Rice and Peas rhythm.

Spragga's new "Thug Nature" album boasts a battery of hits including "Analogy", "Real Niggaz" featuring Twice, "Buck A Catty", "Stunna", and more. The album also showcases the talents of new producers like Mentally Disturbed, "Baby G.", Chester "Element Of Surprise" Harrison, Jeremy "2 Hard" Harding, Chris "CJ" Jammys, Bobby "Massive B." Konders, and Rohan "Snow Cone" Fuller, alongside his usual partners in crime Rookie Productions, and John John. "Thug Nature is all about presenting undiluted dancehall music from Jamaica to the world. It also serves to debut my Red Square production and distribution project".

Believing it's all about love for God and mankind, and staying true to yourself and loved ones, Spragga gives back to society with many charitable donations. He also conducts the "Stay In School" foundation in Jamaica. The Benz in the biz is boundless in 2002 and beyond. .

i think that Kartel's talent is being wasted on some of his anti- lyrics.

found this article to give another point of view about VYBZ KARTEL :eusa_thin hmmm.

Battle of the Bad Dons
by: Tracey-Ann Hutchinson

For quite some time now, certain an' certain dancehall artistes have been making several attempts to establish who is the "baddest" - who deserves the ultimate and well-coveted "badda dan" knighthood. Lyrical battles have been fought, mud has been slung and the muckiness of it all has surely left many a stain - on the persons as individuals, artistes and citizens, as well as on their careers - for all to see. "It" all started, ladies and gents, after the release of a few "bad man tunes' by Assassin, who has denied them being specifically ained at anyone. The self-proclaimed "War Angel" Vybz Kartel believed he was being personally attacked and, of course, loaded, aimed, and fired - verbally, of course, people. Stay with me, now! Kartel headed straight for the drawing board and pulled out some of his best and "baddest" artillery. Assassin, however, chose not to respond to any of Kartle's songs specially designed, manufactured and released for him.

Veteran deejay Spragga Benz then nravely stepped unto the frontline, ready to conquer the 'infamous' Vybz Master. Whe he made the decision to do so, only he knows. As Kartel commented, "Cockroach nuh business inna fowl fight!" And Spragga di Benz evidently forgot his roachie helmet in the first few rounds as his head surely got bitten off more than a few times. Kartel proved not only that his style "genuine like crocodile skin" but, also, that "is not a nice ting fi dis real bad man!" One of Kartel's main attacks was on a portion of Spragga's lyrics in the "Turn Me On" Remix with Kevin Lyttle, in which Spragga said : "jack it up / back it up pon mi / everyting u fi fling pon mi".

Kartel counteracted with a claim that "back it up" endorsed the "doggy style" sexual position. He went on to say : "where is teh centre? u a gay rights representer?" Put the pieces together peeps. One thing I must say, though, is : Wasn't it Kartel who, in "Picture me and you", said "tun back way mek mi get fi enter di centre!"??? Oh yes, it was! Now, now! Quite contradictory, aren't we Vybzie!? Careful with ppl who keepin' up witcha! ;0 ;) After that, though, I thought Spragga was just gonna throw in the bullet-proof vest and boots in the name of his pride. But little did alot of ppl - including myself - know that he wasn't the least ready to "call it quits" yet.

The Olympian torch isn't the only one blazin' right now peeps! But, dudes, seriously! Done offa dem "eediat ting deh!" before it gets any deeper, any more personal, any more violating, and any more violent. It's quite obvious that y'all "are not afraid". We aren't either. But we are concerned, for y'all's sake!

And Assassin, boo, ya' gots my props, my yute! :)

This doesn't give an alternate perspective of Kartel.. more like demonstrates how one simple minded wanna-be journalist can labba labba about things to which she isn't fully informed, and draw her own conclusions as to the gwannings!

Yeah people said that a few of Vybz's songs were aimed at them , and in turn took it personally releasing attacks... but Kartel mashed up their foolishness, and eediat chat so much so they had to call Spragga into the situation lol  Granted Spragga brought some humor to the table with some witty lyrics... but that's it. What happended after that? Kartel bust up that argument again.

So basically, Kartel has a reactive personality and when provoked, is not one to stand down.... that's what all the battling comes down to! Assasin being jealous of his wide spread sucess lashed out at him in song and Kartel in turn did the same. Where is the alternate perspective?

Spragga got involved... WHY? :eusa_eh: Does he, as a dancehall veteran, not have better projects to tackle? I love him, but one eediat ting dat straight up! He was mentoring Assasin, and all of a sudden he's warring a new artist over another man's BEEF? EEEDIAT TING DAT!!

Either way, what it comes down to is this... Assasin can't TALK to Kartel where talent is concerned. He's got some good work out uh raod... but he can't rise to Kartel's skill level in terms of DJing... he's jealous like a little girl... that's all this foolishness is! That's why he left the Deadly Alliance because Elephant Man and Kartel were out shining him not only in JA but all over the world. Which means what? That they are eating more food... so he's envious!

Assasin is good, Kartel is great, they should stop fighting, you don't see Bling Dawg warring with Kartel... I mean.. some people just need to get a grip!

Who is this Tracey anyway? I mean really what mag/paper does she write for? Her chat bout the lyrics is stupid... anyone can contort lyrics to sound however they want to Beenie did it to Bounty and Bouty turned around and did the same! What's REALLY Tracy's point? :eusa_eh:
