Default Air Jamaica boosts summer schedule to Grenada

NEW YORK, USA: Air Jamaica has announced more flights to the Caribbean island of Grenada this summer, increasing its non-stop schedule from four to five flights per week to and from New York's JFK International Airport, beginning the week of June 25, 2006.

JM 94, which currently operates on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, will have an additional Thursday departure. All flights depart New York's JFK at 10:30 a.m., arriving in Grenada at 3:10 p.m. On the return leg, JM 95 departs Grenada at 4:00 p.m. and arrives in New York at 8:50 p.m.

Air Jamaica senior executive George deMercado said the New York-Grenada dedicated route continues to perform exceptionally well, due in large measure to the loyalty of Grenadians to a Caribbean carrier and an award-winning in-flight experience.

"The partnership between Grenada and Air Jamaica has been mutually beneficial and we look forward to strengthening our relationship during what we expect will be an exceptionally busy summer period," said deMercado.

He noted that the additional fifth flight, using a leased Boeing 757 aircraft, will operate seasonally between June 25 through September 10, 2006 . All five flights have been loaded in the reservations system and are available for sale, said deMercado.

There may be a slight misunderstanding. Read the article again:

That's five weekly non-stop flights between Grenada and New York. There is a flight available to Jamaica but this stops in Barbados first. Grenada is hoping that Air Jamaica provides a non-stop flight between Grenada and Jamaica so that persons can travel to other cities like Atlanta, Toronto, Chicago, etc....

    ES

Air Jamaica is fully owned by the Government of Jamaica. Airlines like BWIA, British Airways and Air Canada once had shares in the airline

In 2004, after severe turbulence in the airline industry and massive financial losses, the Government of Jamaica reclaimed full control of the airline. Businessman, O.K. Melhado is chairman of the board and veteran airline executive, Mike Conway is the President and CEO.
    Quote taken from Here

With respect to ownership of other Caribbean Airlines:

    1. LIAT (Leeward Islands Air Transport)...owned by the Governments of Antigua, Barbados, Trinidad and St. Vincent.

    2. BWIA (British West Indian Airlines)...The Trinidad Government has the majority share holdings.

    3. Caribbean Star...owned by Texas billionaire, Allen Stanford
