Thumbs up Haiti rejoins Caribbean Community

GEORGETOWN, Guyana (AFP): Haiti has been officially readmitted to the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) after being kicked out in 2004, according to the headquarters here of the Caribbean trade and economic development bloc.

In a statement, the Caribbean Community and Common Market also invited Haiti's new president Rene Preval to participate in the group's next summit, July 3-6, at St. Kitts and Nevis.

"As an elected head of state, President Rene Preval is invited not only to represent Haiti at the 27th summit of the organization, but also to speak at its opening," the statement said.

Haiti, with 8.5 million residents, was shut out of CARICOM the day after former president Jean Bertrand Aristide resigned under threat of armed rebellion.

CARICOM now welcomes the return of an elected government in Haiti following presidential elections in February and legislative ones in April.

The Haitian parliament this week approved the coalition cabinet of new Prime Minister Jacques-Edouard Alexis, who has pledged to re-establish the rule of law in the western hemisphere's poorest country.

CARICOM, created in 1958, groups 15 Caribbean countries.
