    Default Not impressed

i took a cruise to the bahamas this month, and this is my first time being to the bahamas and I wasn't impressed one bit.

The entire place has no vibes watsoeva and just looks alot like jamaica if u ask me. the cars are pretty much the same in jamaica and i knew i felt right at home when i saw the police. yup, pretty much the same costume they wear as the jamaican cops. u kno those guys that sell the water on the road sides?? yup, they are there in the bahamas. young kids hussling, they're there.

ok, so i got a chance to go snorkeling. me being a sea and water person this was the highlight of my day. the corals looked nice, but not as great as they make it on the travel channel. (of course not) i bought a bag of fish food from the tour guides and when i decided it was time to feed the fishies i poored out half of my bag in the water. then i saw all kinds of beautiful fish swimming around me and that was nice.

parasailing got cancelled due to strong winds which i was very disappointed in doing but since that was cancelled i decided to do some walking up and down the island. it was just boring with not a thing to see. i spent 3 hours after my little walk around the island to go back to my fellow cruise passengers found a hammock and slept like a baby.

i must say even though the country feels like jamaica, it looks alot more organized.

has anyone else been to the bahamas??
what do you all think of it??

First off...The Bahamas is a group of islands so please specify which you have been to. I have not been to any but am not too keen on going either. I've heard that Nassau is indeed beautiful but the prices there are ultra ridiculous. Kinda wanted to go to Atlantis...but meh....unless I make some serious moolah in the future...I guess no Nassau for me.

My parents have been to the Atlantis on different occations, the way they talk about the place makes me want to go . It sounds lovely. The price there sound stiff still, around US$1000 a night for a basic suite.

I was wondering if Drew made a visit Altlantis.Tv shows it as paradise, unless Drew only made it to Bahamas version of Downtown Kingston.

Thank you to Manu for pointing out that the Bahamas is made up of many islands, and not just Nassau (the capital city). For those that dont know the Bahamas is made up of 700 islands, cays, and islets. Take the time if you want to, to explore Freeport (the 2nd city), Harbour Island (no cars allowed there), the Exuma Cays (with its pink sand and large Iguana's), San Salvador (spot of Christopher Columbus's landfall in 1492), Inagua (Has the largest reserve of West Indian flamingoes in this region), Andros (largest island with the third largest barrier reef in the world, and world famous bone fishing lodges), etc. etc. You cannot critique the Bahamas on just one island alone, thats like critiquing Jamaica by one parish alone.

I am from Nassau, which is 21 by 7 miles long, brother you bound to run out of things to do, its an island, and a small island at that. The uniform of Bahamian police are derived from the days of British Colonialism, the same as in Jamaica, so no surprise there at the similarities. Yes kids hussle there, there are street vendors, there is good and bad. Yes we drive the same cars (American, British, German, Japanese models etc.) that they do in almost every place in this Western hemisphere. Should be no surprises there. What exactly Drew was your point and your assumptions before going anyway? Paradise is made, not found.

As far as the Bahamas being just like Jamiaca, yes there are some obvious similarities due to demographics, culture, history, and geography. But if someone wants a Jamaican experience they go to Jamaica, and if someone wants a Bahamian experience they go to the Bahamas. The differences exsist, you sometimes need to take the time and the effort to see it. An experience based on a few hours in port at Nassau Harbour is not a fair critique to make of an entire country. I bet your 'walk around the island', was limited to Bay Street, and the Cable Beach strip. Did you make it past the light on East St, 'Ova da Hill'?

Anyways I am glad you enjoyed the water, and the corals, (and of course TV is never fully honest with any destination not a surprise there either). I will make it to Jamaica one of these days, and I will plan a very indepth trip, then I will give you my five cents on your side of the fence.

You think the prices in Nassau are ridiculous, go to London (third most expensive city in the world behind Tokyo, and I forget the other city).

Atlantis on Paradise Island is a very nice resort. I'v stayed there myself. Yes it is expensive, but I dont think all the rooms are $1000 US per night. It depends on the room and its ammenities. The Bridge Suit where MJ stayed once goes for $25,000 per night . Private butler and all. Ah the lives of the filthy rich.
