Apparently there is a movie being made. It's in production now.
I'm watching the series and it's quite good. Very faithful to the books as I remember them.
The Tripods control the entire Earth. All technology has disappeared and with it all human creativity. There are no more wars, no independent thought among the capped.
John Christopher's three book tale of post invasion Earth circa 2089AD tells of some boys attempt to escape being capped by the Tripods - Three legged creatures - via a ceremony to obtain adult status in their English village (during which a 'cap' is secured to the head), their race to seek other free men, to avoid capture and their discovery that the entire human race is being controlled by aliens in robots.
The White Mountains deals with the boys' search to find a mythical place where men are free. They find their way dogged by Tripods, traitors and new friends.
The City of Gold and Lead. The boys head out to Germany to infiltrate the city of the tripods under the guise of competing in the Games. The winner of the Games gets to serve the Tripods. It is an honour to serve the Tripods.
The Pool of Fire. Will and a small group of free people plan to destroy the three great cities of the Tripods before the arrival of a space ship destined to doom humanity?
I remember reading these books in High School and I recommend them to anyone and everyone. Recently, I found out these books were made into a 1995 series on British Television. I also found out there is a fourth book, called "When the Tripods Came" which I'm told you need not read. It is a prequel, outlining how the Tripods came in the 20th century, seemingly driven away only to return and control those they didn't kill through subliminal messaging.
