A high voter turnout is expected in Guyana today as that Caricom state votes for a president and 65-member National Assembly. If last Monday's voting by approximately 8,000 members of the Disciplined Forces (police, army, fire, prison services and special constables) is any guide, then today's voter turnout could be as much as 75 per cent of the estimated 492,000 eligible electors. Armed with voter IDs or other forms of approved identification, Guyanese will begin voting at 6 o' clock at 2,000 designated polling stations spread across the country's 83,000 square miles, including far-flung hinterland regions.

Guyana traditionally has a very high voter turnout at national elections, varying from 80 to 90 per cent with the two major contenders for state power - the incumbent People's Progressive Party (PPP) and its primary challenger the People's National Congress (PNC) - normally successful in motivating their mass base of nationals of East Indian and African descent.

Jagdeo thanks a "mature" Guyana for his fourth term

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, September 1, 2006 - Forty-two year-old Bharrat Jagdeo last night thanked Guyanese for their "maturity" in ensuring a peaceful election as he was again handed the mandate to serve Guyana for a fourth consecutive term, in a landslide victory.
Jagdeo and the People's Progressive Party/Civic was yesterday declared the winner by the Guyana Elections Commission as the agency wrapped up its official count of the votes from the August 28th election.
