Happy Independence Day!

August 31 is Independence Day, marking the anniversary of the end of colonial rule. Celebrations begin with a parade of the armed forces from the Queen’s Park Savannah to the St James barracks, and culminate with a grand fireworks display.


Caroni Swamp on the western side of Trinidad is a highlight of every birding tour. Numerous water birds can be seen there, but the major attraction is the Scarlet Ibises that roost there. During nesting season fewer ibises are present, as most are in Venezuela, but some are always there.

"Forged From the Love of Liberty" was originally composed to be the anthem of the West Indies Federation (consisting mainly of all British Caribbean colonies intended to achieve independence as one nation). The federation's capital was on Trinidad, and Trinidad was one of the primary colonies in the federation (having a large part of the population and wealth). Upon the dissolution of the federation in 1962, Trinidad and Tobago decided to use the anthem originally meant for the federation when it achieved full independence later that year.

Everyday while passing on the highway to go home I see this huge national flag that was put up the day before Independence day. I think its absolutely awe-inspiring because of the bold red and its sheer size!!! I think its 60x30 feet.
